The Barrow Point or Mutumui language, also known as Eibole, was an Aboriginal language spoken in Queensland, Australia. It is now considered an extinct language. This means that there are no longer any people who speak it as their native language. The last known speaker, Urwunjin Roger Hart, passed away in 2005.

What is the Barrow Point Language?

The Barrow Point language was part of a larger group of languages called Pama–Nyungan. This is one of the biggest language families in Australia. The Barrow Point language was specifically part of the Paman branch. It was spoken by the Mutumui people. They lived near Barrow Point in the northern part of Queensland.

Why Languages Become Extinct

A language becomes extinct when its last speaker dies. This often happens when younger generations stop learning their traditional language. Instead, they might learn a different language, like English. When a language disappears, we lose a lot of cultural knowledge. This includes stories, songs, and unique ways of understanding the world.

The Sounds of Barrow Point

Languages have different sounds, just like English has its own sounds. The Barrow Point language had some special sounds called fricatives. These are sounds made by pushing air through a narrow gap in your mouth. Think of the "th" sound in "thin" or the "f" sound in "fan".

In Barrow Point, two of these fricative sounds were /ð/ (like the "th" in "this") and /ɣ/ (a sound similar to the "g" in "go", but made further back in the throat). These sounds often developed from other sounds when they followed a strong, long vowel.

Preserving Aboriginal Languages

Even though Barrow Point is extinct, many other Aboriginal languages are still spoken today. People are working hard to keep these languages alive. They are creating language programs and dictionaries. This helps new generations learn and use their traditional languages. Learning about languages like Barrow Point helps us understand the rich history of Australia.
