Grant Barry Anderson, born on October 24, 1954, is a former judge from Minnesota. He served as an associate justice on the highest court in Minnesota, called the Minnesota Supreme Court. Before that, he was a judge on the Minnesota Court of Appeals.
Growing Up and Learning
Barry Anderson was born in Mankato, Minnesota, in 1954. He grew up in Mankato. He went to Gustavus Adolphus College and graduated in 1976. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with great honors.
Later, he attended the University of Minnesota Law School. In 1979, he earned his law degree, called a Juris Doctor.
After law school, Anderson worked as a lawyer. He practiced law in Fairmont, Minnesota and then in Hutchinson, Minnesota. For more than ten years, he was the city attorney for Hutchinson. This meant he was the main lawyer for the city government. He was also certified as a civil trial specialist. This means he was an expert in representing people in civil court cases.
Working as a Judge and in the Community

Barry Anderson has been very active in his community. He was the chairman of the Board of Directors for Hutchinson Community Video Network. This group helped with local public-access television. He also served two terms as President of the Hutchinson Rotary Club.
More recently, he was on the board for the Minnesota Valley YMCA. He also coached youth sports teams. Anderson has been a national judge for the "We the People" competition. This competition teaches high school students about civics and the U.S. Constitution. For over 20 years, he has also hosted "Your Legislators" on Pioneer PBS. This show helps people understand what lawmakers are doing.
Anderson has also helped other lawyers learn more. He has given talks on topics like using expert witnesses in court. He also served on the Judicial Council. This group helps manage the entire court system in Minnesota.
In August 1998, Anderson became a judge on the Minnesota Court of Appeals. He served there until 2004. Then, Governor Tim Pawlenty appointed him to the Minnesota Supreme Court. He started this new role on October 13, 2004.
In 2006, he was elected to serve a six-year term on the Supreme Court. In 2012, he ran for reelection. He won with 58.9% of the votes. He retired from the Supreme Court on May 10, 2024.
