Early Life and Family

Bartholomew Reade was born in a town called Cromer, which is in Norfolk, England. His parents were Roger Reade and Catherine. He also had at least two brothers named John and Simon. By 1486, he was already living and working in London. His mother's will mentioned him as a "citizen and goldsmith of London," which means he was a respected member of the city's community and a skilled goldsmith.

Bartholomew Reade was a very talented goldsmith. For many years, he held a special job called the Master of the Mint. This meant he was in charge of making coins for the country! In 1489, he worked with Lord Daubeney to create the very first gold sovereigns. These were important new gold coins.

He also served in other important roles in London. In 1497, he was one of the Sheriffs of London. Sheriffs helped keep law and order in the city. Two years later, in 1499, he became an alderman for the area of Aldersgate. An alderman was a senior member of the city's government.

His biggest role came in 1502 when he was chosen to be the Lord Mayor of London. He took over from another goldsmith named John Shaa. During his time as mayor, he used a grand building called Crosby Place as his official hall. He was known for hosting amazing parties and feasts for important visitors, like ambassadors sent by Emperor Maximilian.

His Legacy

Sir Bartholomew Reade passed away in 1505. He and his wife were buried at a church called St John Zachary. This church was a common burial place for many important goldsmiths from the city. In his will, he made sure to leave money to start a free school in his hometown of Cromer. The school was managed by the Goldsmiths' Company, which was his professional group.
