Bartolomeo Schedoni (sometimes called Schedone) (1578 – December 23, 1615) was an Italian painter from Modena. He was one of the first artists to paint in the Baroque style.

About His Life

Bartolomeo Schedoni was born in Modena. He later moved to Parma with his father, who made masks for the important Farnese family.

In 1595, Schedoni went to Rome to study art. He briefly trained with a painter named Federico Zuccari. After getting sick, he went back to Parma. Some art historians thought he might have studied with Annibale Carracci. However, his early paintings show that he learned a lot by studying the works of Correggio in Parma.

Schedoni's first known art job was in 1598. He later moved back to Modena. There, he became a painter for the court of Duke Cesare d’Este. He worked with another artist, Ercole dell'Abate, to decorate the ceiling of a room in the Palazzo Comunale. This work was finished in July 1607.

After December 1607, Schedoni worked in Parma for Duke Ranuccio I. The Duke really liked Schedoni's art. When Schedoni got married in 1611, the Duke even gave him a farm. Schedoni created small religious paintings and a large altarpiece called Holy Family in Glory Worshipped by SS John the Baptist, Francis of Assisi, Lawrence and Peregrinus.

Bartolomeo Schedoni passed away on December 23, 1615.

His Painting Style

Schedoni's paintings often show bright figures against a dark background. He paid a lot of attention to the way clothes looked, making them colorful and folded in sharp angles. This style made the paintings feel very emotional.

Later in his career, Schedoni's style was influenced by Ludovico Carracci. Another important artist who influenced Schedoni was Caravaggio. Caravaggio's painting Entombment of Christ (1603–04) was a model for Schedoni's own Deposition (around 1613). Other painters, like Giovanni Lanfranco, were inspired by Schedoni's dramatic style.

Schedoni's most famous paintings are in the Galleria Nazionale of Parma. These include two artworks made for the church of the Capuchin convent in Fontevivo, near Parma.
