Discovering Bartonsville's Past
Bartonsville was started in 1831 by a man named Colonel Joseph Benjamin Barton. He opened a hotel and a post office. These were important stops along a stagecoach route called the Easton-Belmont Turnpike. This route was very busy, making it a good place for a business.
Colonel Barton eventually moved north. He later helped start another town called Waymart. Even though he left, his name stuck with Bartonsville. His daughter, Lydia Barton, stayed in the community. She is buried in Custard's Cemetery, one of the main cemeteries nearby.
The Custard family also played a big part in Bartonsville's early days. They arrived shortly after Barton and opened a sawmill. This mill was on the Pocono Creek. The Custard family also helped start a Lutheran church. They even gave land for a school and a cemetery.
Around the year 1900, Bartonsville was a typical small community in the Mid-Atlantic region. It had two one-room schoolhouses because it was spread across different townships. There was also a grist mill (for grinding grain), a tannery (for making leather), a large hotel, a creamery, a general store, a post office, and a cobbler (shoe repairer). The community was lively, with a dance hall, a brass band, and even a baseball team!
Bartonsville Today
Today, Bartonsville has grown into what's called a "bedroom community." This means many people who live here travel to other places for work. The area has become more developed, with modern shopping centers and neighborhoods.
Pennsylvania Route 611 runs through Bartonsville. This road is lined with many stores and places to eat. Some of the neighborhoods here include Barton Glen, Tara Hills, Pocono Laurel Lake, Fawn Acres, and Buck Valley.
Most of the jobs in Bartonsville today are in retail (stores) and hospitality (hotels and restaurants). The community's ZIP code is 18321. In the year 2000, about 1,753 people lived in this area.
