Penstemon pudicus, also known as the bashful beardtongue or Kawich Range beardtongue, is a special kind of flowering plant. It's quite rare and is only found in one specific place in the United States: the Kawich Range in Nye County, Nevada. This plant is part of the plantain family.

Meet the Bashful Beardtongue!

The bashful beardtongue is a perennial plant. This means it lives for many years, not just one season. It's a type of herb, which means it has soft stems instead of woody ones like trees.

What Does It Look Like?

This interesting plant can grow up to 50 centimeters tall. That's about half the height of an average 12-year-old! In the summer, usually in June and July, the bashful beardtongue shows off its pretty purple-blue flowers.

Where Does It Live?

This unique plant makes its home in pinyon-juniper woodlands. These are forests with specific types of pine and juniper trees. You'll find the bashful beardtongue growing in rocky soils and on rocky outcrops, which are parts of rock formations that stick out from the ground.

Why Is It Special?

The bashful beardtongue is considered a rare plant. It's only found in the Kawich Mountains, which are located in central Nevada. Scientists have only found about six different places where this plant grows.

Even though there might be many plants in these few spots, there are probably no more than 1,000 individual plants in total. This makes it a very special and important plant to protect!
