Basilica of Saint-Nicolas, Saint-Nicolas-de-Port facts for kids
The Basilica of Saint Nicholas (in French, Basilique Saint-Nicolas) is a special church in the town of Saint-Nicolas-de-Port, France. It is a place where many people visit, like a pilgrimage site. People believe it holds some very old and important items, called relics, that belonged to Saint Nicholas. These relics were supposedly brought here from Italy.
History of the Basilica
Saint Nicholas became a very important figure, like a special protector, for the old region called the Duchy of Lorraine. The church you see today was built a long time ago, between the 1400s and 1500s.
Beautiful Stained Glass Windows
This basilica is famous for its amazing stained glass windows. These windows were made during the Renaissance period by talented artists. Some of these artists include Nicolas Droguet from Lyon, Valentin Bousch from Strasbourg, and Hans von Kulmbach and Veit Hirsvogel from Nuremberg. There were also other artists, like Georges Millereau, and some whose names we don't know. Some windows were replaced in the 1800s because the old ones were lost.
A Protected Landmark
The Basilica of Saint Nicholas has been recognized as a French Monument historique since 1840. This means it's a very important historical building that is protected. In 1950, it was also given the title of a "minor basilica" by the church.
