Nemophila breviflora, also known as Great Basin baby-blue-eyes, is a pretty flowering plant. It belongs to the borage family. You can find this plant growing naturally in parts of southwestern Canada and the northwestern United States. It often grows in forests, thickets, and wet areas near streams.
What is Great Basin Baby-Blue-Eyes?
This plant is an annual herb. This means it grows from a seed, flowers, produces new seeds, and then dies all within one year. It has a stem that can grow between 10 to 30 centimeters (about 4 to 12 inches) tall. The stem feels a bit fleshy and can be slightly prickly.
Leaves of the Plant
The leaves of the Great Basin baby-blue-eyes are arranged in an alternating pattern along the stem. This means they grow one after another, not directly opposite each other. Each leaf is divided into several wide, pointed sections, which are called lobes.
Flowers and Seeds
The flowers of this plant grow one by one, not in a cluster. Each flower sits on a short stalk called a pedicel.
- The flower has small green parts called sepals that protect the bud. These sepals are only a few millimeters long and have stiff hairs along their edges.
- The main part of the flower, called the corolla, is shaped like a bell. It can be white or have a light purple color. It is also very small, only a few millimeters wide.
- After the flower blooms, it forms a small fruit called a capsule. This capsule grows inside the sepals. Inside the capsule, there is usually just one red seed. This seed has tiny pits or dents on its surface.
