Meet Basto: A Racing Legend
Basto was a brown horse. His father was a famous horse named the Byerley Turk. His mother was Bay Peg, whose father was the Leedes Arabian. A man named Sir William Ramsden bred Basto. He sold Basto to the Duke of Devonshire when Basto was still young.
Basto became a top racehorse. He raced at Newmarket, which is a very important place for horse racing in Britain. He won at least five "match races." A match race is when only two horses race against each other. He beat some of the best horses of his time. We don't know all his wins because records were not kept perfectly back then.
After his racing days, Basto became a father to many important horses. He had several daughters who became great mothers themselves. These daughters gave birth to famous racehorses like Old Crab, Blacklegs, and Snip. Other well-known children of Basto included Brown Betty, Coquette, and Soreheels.
