The Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pino is an important Catholic church. It is located in the town of Teror, on the island of Gran Canaria in Spain. This beautiful building was constructed between 1760 and 1767. It is dedicated to the Virgen del Pino, also known as Our Lady of the Pine.
History of the Basilica
The church in Teror has a long history. The local church community, called a parish, was first started in 1505.
Building the Current Church
The church you see today was built in a style called Neoclassical. This style often uses ideas from ancient Greek and Roman buildings. Construction began in 1760. The church was officially opened for worship, or consecrated, in 1767. It was dedicated to the Virgen del Pino. According to a local story, the Virgen del Pino appeared in that very spot.
Becoming a Basilica
The Virgen del Pino was declared the special protector, or patron saint, of Gran Canaria. This happened on August 30, 1914. On the same day, the church was given the title of a basilica. A basilica is a church that has special importance given by the Pope.
Just a few years later, on January 12, 1916, the Pope officially named it a Basilica minor. This was a very big deal! It was the first church in all of the Canary Islands to receive this special title.
