Basúchil is a town in the state of Chihuahua, Mexico. Its name comes from the Raramuri language word "Bajichi," which means "water well." The town is part of the municipality of Guerrero.
Basúchil was started in 1649. It was built as a fort to protect a Jesuit mission in the nearby Tarahumara Papigochi region. This area is now known as Cd. Guerrero. The town was first called La Villa de Aguilar. It was named by its founder, Diego Guajardo Fajardo, in honor of his hometown in Spain.
In 1652, the town was attacked and many people were killed. The attack was led by a Tarahumara leader named Teporaca [es]. Years later, the town was rebuilt and given its current name, Basúchil. Today, the Adolfo Lopez Mateos-Madera Highway (Route 16) runs along the east side of the town.
