The Batería de Urrutia is an old military fort, also known as a battery. It is located in a town called San Fernando, which is in the Province of Cádiz in Andalusia, Spain. This battery was an important part of a group of forts and defensive walls built to protect the area.

What is Batería de Urrutia?

Batería de Urrutia is a type of military building. It was designed to hold cannons and soldiers. Its main job was to defend the coast from attacks by sea. Think of it as a strong lookout point with big guns.

Why was it built?

This battery was built in the early 1800s. It was part of a larger defense system. This system protected the southern entrance to the Islote de Sancti Petri. This small island was very important for controlling who could enter the bay.

Part of a bigger defense system

The Batería de Urrutia did not stand alone. It worked together with other forts. These included the famous Castillo de Sancti Petri (Sancti Petri Castle). There were also two other batteries nearby: the Batería de Aspiroz and the Batería de San Genís. All these structures worked together to keep the coast safe. They formed a strong line of defense against enemies.

Protecting History

Today, the Batería de Urrutia is no longer used for defense. Instead, it is protected as a historical site. The Spanish government recognized its importance. It was declared a protected site under a special law from April 22, 1949. Later, Law 16/1985 also helped protect it. This means it is part of Spain's Patrimonio Histórico Españo (Spanish Historical Heritage). Protecting it helps make sure future generations can learn about its history.
