Islote de Sancti Petri facts for kids
The Islote de Sancti Petri is a small island off the coast of Spain. It belongs to the town of San Fernando, Cádiz in the province of Cádiz, which is part of the Andalusia region. The island is very close to the mainland and is about 16 kilometres (10 mi) south of Cadiz city.
For many years, the island was a special military area, meaning people couldn't visit it easily. Now, it is managed by the Spanish Environment Ministry, making it more open to the public.
Long ago, around 100 BC, a Greek historian named Strabo wrote about this island in his book Geographica. He mentioned that people from a city called Tyre (in what is now Lebanon) built a special temple here. This temple was for a god named Melkart, whom the Greeks called Hercules. The temple was on the eastern part of the island, and a city was built on the western part.

On the island, you can still see the old parts of a castle from the 1700s. The main tower of the castle has been rebuilt and is now used as a lighthouse. This lighthouse helps ships find their way.
In 1993, the castle was named a Bien de Interés Cultural. This means it is a very important historical site in Spain that needs to be protected.
The name "Sancti Petri" is also used for a beach on the mainland. This beach is in Chiclana de la Frontera and is directly across from the island.
