A post office called Batesland has been in operation since 1923. The town was named in honor of C. A. Bates, who had surveyed the site.

There were 33 housing units at an average density of 366.7 per square mile (141.6/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 2.8% White and 97.2% Native American. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.7% of the population.
