Bathsheba facts for kids
Bathsheba (also called Bat-Sheva or Batsheva) was an important woman in the Hebrew Bible. Her name means "daughter of Sheba" or "daughter of the oath." She was first married to a brave soldier named Uriah the Hittite. Later, she became the wife of David, who was the king of Israel.
Bathsheba was the mother of Solomon, who became king after David. This made Bathsheba the Gebirah, which means "Queen Mother." The Queen Mother was a very important and powerful person in ancient Israel.
King David and Bathsheba
One day, King David was walking on the roof of his palace. He saw a very beautiful woman bathing. He asked about her and found out she was Bathsheba, the wife of Uriah. Uriah was a loyal and skilled soldier in David's army.
King David wanted Bathsheba to be his wife. So, he sent a message to his general, Joab. The message ordered that Uriah be sent to the most dangerous part of a battle. Uriah was killed during the siege of a city called Rabbah.
After Uriah's death, Bathsheba mourned for him. Then, King David brought Bathsheba into his home and married her.
Consequences and Solomon's Birth
David's actions were not pleasing to God. God sent a prophet named Nathan to speak with King David. Nathan told David a story that helped him understand his mistake. King David realized he had done wrong and was very sorry.
Soon after Bathsheba and David's first child was born, the child became very ill. David prayed to God and fasted, hoping the child would get better. But after seven days, the child sadly died. King David accepted this as a difficult consequence of his actions. He then went to God's house to worship.
Later, Bathsheba gave birth to another son, Solomon. When King David grew old, Bathsheba reminded him of a promise he had made. She made sure that Solomon would become the next king, even though David had older sons from other wives. This showed Bathsheba's influence and importance in the royal family.
