The Battery Heights Historic District is a special old neighborhood in Raleigh, North Carolina. It's located southeast of the city center. This neighborhood got its name from old military forts, called "batteries," that were in the area during the American Civil War. Even though it's close to downtown, it feels like a quiet, spread-out suburban area.

Discovering Battery Heights' History

Battery Heights is located in Raleigh, North Carolina. It's bordered by East Martin Street to the north and East Davie Street to the south. Battery Drive is on the east, and Sherrybrook Drive (which used to be Cox Street) is on the west.

This neighborhood has 18 original buildings that are still in great shape. They were built between 1956 and 1964. Battery Heights is a good example of how Raleigh grew after World War II. The homes here are mostly Ranch and Split-Level styles. They are built using brick, stone, and concrete.

A Special Place for Families

Battery Heights was one of the few neighborhoods planned for the African American community in Raleigh. The first people who owned and lived in these homes were important members of the community. They included doctors, teachers, builders, and government workers.

One of these residents was George Exum, who was a general contractor. He helped build several of the homes in the neighborhood.

Battery Heights Today

Since the mid-2010s, Battery Heights has been getting a fresh look. Many new homes are being built on empty lots. Older homes are also being repaired and updated.

The neighborhood is home to the newly renovated Robert's Park and Community Center. This park is right in the middle of Battery Heights. It has a fun playground for kids, tennis courts, and a basketball court. There's also a small baseball field and a community center for everyone to enjoy.

The Raleigh National Cemetery is also located within the Battery Heights neighborhood. It covers about 7 acres.

Recognized History

Because of its unique history and well-preserved buildings, Battery Heights is considered very important. It was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places in January 2011. This means it's recognized as a special place worth protecting for future generations.
