What Was Battle, Wyoming?
Battle was an unincorporated community. This means it was a place where people lived, but it didn't have its own official local government like a city or town. Instead, it was part of the larger Carbon County.
Why Was It a Coal Town?
Battle was important because of the coal found nearby. Coal is a type of rock that can be burned for energy. In the past, coal was a main source of fuel for homes, trains, and factories. Towns like Battle grew up around mines to house the workers and their families.
Life in a Mining Community
Life in a coal town like Battle could be tough. Miners worked hard, often in dangerous conditions, to dig coal out of the ground. The community would have been small, with homes, a general store, and perhaps a school. Everything revolved around the mine. When the coal ran out or was no longer needed, these towns often became empty.
Climate at Old Battle
The area around Old Battle has a special type of weather called a subalpine climate. This means it's found in high mountain regions, just below the tree line. It has cold, snowy winters and cool summers.
Weather Station Information
There is a weather station called SNOTEL at Old Battle. It sits at an altitude of 10,000 feet (3,048 meters). This station helps scientists track snow levels and other weather data in the mountains. The climate here is classified as Dfc by the Köppen system. This means it has cold winters and cool summers, with enough rain or snow all year.
