The Battle of Cuddalore was a naval fight that happened on April 29, 1758. It took place near Cuddalore, off the coast of India. This battle was part of the Seven Years' War, a big global conflict.

In this battle, a British navy group led by Vice-Admiral George Pocock faced off against a French navy group. The French side was commanded by Comte d'Aché. The battle itself did not have a clear winner right away. This means it was an indecisive battle.

Even though there was no clear winner, the French fleet achieved its main goal. They successfully delivered important supplies and soldiers to the city of Pondicherry. The people defending Pondicherry really needed these reinforcements.

During the battle, the British lost 29 sailors who were killed and 89 who were hurt. The French had more casualties, with 99 killed and 321 wounded. The same two navy groups met again later in other battles. They fought on August 3 in the Battle of Negapatam and again on September 10, 1759, in the Battle of Pondicherry.

Naval Forces in the Battle

This battle involved many powerful warships from both sides. These ships were called "ships of the line." They were the biggest warships of their time. They fought in a line to use all their cannons.

British Ships

The British fleet was led by Vice-Admiral George Pocock. His fleet included seven ships of the line. They also had one smaller frigate and one storeship. A storeship carried supplies.

French Ships

The French fleet was led by Comte d'Aché. His fleet was slightly larger. It had eight ships of the line. They also had three frigates, which are faster, smaller warships.
