The Battle and Martí's Death

On May 19, 1895, José Martí was leading a group of Cuban rebels. They faced off against the Spanish army in what became known as the Battle of Dos Ríos. This was one of the first major fights in the war. During the battle, Martí was sadly killed while fighting.

The Cuban rebels tried to get Martí's body back, but the Spanish forces were too strong. The Spanish army buried José Martí.
