13 Galleys |
The Battle of Estepona was an important naval battle that happened in 1342. It was fought between the navy of the Crown of Aragon and the fleet of the Marinid Dynasty. The battle took place in the Bay of Estepona, which is located in the Strait of Gibraltar. The Crown of Aragon won this battle, and the Marinid fleet was defeated.
The Battle Story
The Aragonese fleet had sailed from Valencia. Their goal was to meet up with the fleet of the Crown of Castile. This meeting was planned to happen in the Strait of Gibraltar, as agreed in the Treaty of Madrid.
While sailing near the Bay of Estepona, the Aragonese fleet came across 13 Marinid ships called galleys. A galley is a type of ship that was powered by oars and sails. The two fleets immediately began to fight.
The Aragonese fleet fought bravely and managed to capture four of the Marinid galleys. Two more Marinid ships were forced to run aground, meaning they got stuck on the shore. The remaining seven Marinid ships managed to escape.
This naval victory was very important. It was part of a larger military effort. Other battles like Bullones, Algeciras, and Guadalmesí were also part of this campaign. All these battles led up to the big Siege of Algeciras.
