Java's Ancient Kingdoms
For many centuries, from the 700s to the 1100s, different kings and noble families ruled the island of Java. In the eastern part of Java, there were kingdoms like Sailendra, Kediri, Tumapel, and Majapahit. These kingdoms often fought over good land to grow rice.
The Rise of Ken Arok
In the early 1200s, a new powerful leader appeared. His name was Ken Arok. He started as a village chief but wanted to gain more power. Stories say he was very ambitious. Ken Arok managed to make his village an ally of the Kingdom of Tumapel. This made him an important advisor to Tumapel's king, Tunggul Ametung.
After some clever plans, Ken Arok became king himself. He took over the throne after Tunggul Ametung died.
Preparing for Battle
Once Ken Arok became King of Tumapel, he began to gather his army and power. He wanted to fight against the Kediri Kingdom, which was Tumapel's old rival. The king of Kediri, Kertajaya, also gathered his forces. He got ready to face Ken Arok in battle.
The Battle of Genter
The main battle happened in either 1221 or 1222. It took place at a spot called Genter (or Ganter) in eastern Kediri. During this battle, Ken Arok defeated King Kertajaya. This caused the Kediri army to be completely defeated and run away.
What Happened After Genter
The Battle of Genter marked the end of the Kediri Kingdom. For Ken Arok, his victory allowed him to start his own royal family. This family became known as the Rajasa dynasty. They went on to rule the Kingdom of Singhasari.
