The Battle of Udgir was an important fight in Indian history. It happened on 3 February 1760 in a place called Udgir. This battle was between two powerful groups: the Maratha Empire and the Nizam of Hyderabad.

The Battle of Udgir

This battle took place on February 3, 1760. It was fought in Udgir, which is in present-day Hyderabad State. The main groups fighting were the Maratha Empire and the Nizam of Hyderabad.

Who Fought?

The Maratha army was led by Sadashivrao Bhau. He was a very important leader for the Marathas. The Nizam's army was led by Salabat Jung. He was the brother of Asaf Jah II, who later became the Nizam. Salabat Jung wanted to become the Nizam himself.

What Happened?

The Maratha forces, led by Sadashivrao Bhau, won the battle. They defeated Salabat Jung's army. After this defeat, Salabat Jung's power weakened. The French governor, Marquis de Bussy-Castelnau, who was helping Salabat Jung, was called back to Pondicherry. This made it easier for Asaf Jah II to take full control as the Nizam.

What Changed After?

Because the Marathas won, the Nizam's forces had to give up a lot of land. This land brought in a huge amount of money every year, about 60 lakhs. Important cities like Ahmadnagar, Daulatabad, Burhanpur, and Bijapur were given to the Marathas.

Right after this victory, the Marathas had to move north. They went to fight a strong Afghan army. This Afghan force was led by Ahmed Shah Durrani. This next big fight was known as the Third Battle of Panipat.
