The Battle of the Mimbres River was a surprise attack that happened on December 4, 1860. It involved a group of American militia (citizen soldiers) and a camp of Chiricahua Apache people. The fight took place along the western side of the Mimbres River in what is now New Mexico.

What Happened at Mimbres River?

On December 4, 1860, a group of about 30 armed miners launched a surprise attack. These miners were led by a man named James Henry Tevis. They attacked at sunrise, which is very early in the morning.

Why the Attack Happened

The miners said they attacked because some of their livestock (like cattle or horses) had been stolen. They wanted to get their animals back and punish those they believed took them. This kind of action, where people take matters into their own hands, was common during this time.

The Apache's Side

The Apache people in the camp were led by a famous chief named Mangas Coloradas. They were completely surprised by the sudden attack. Because they were caught off guard, the fight was over very quickly.

The Outcome of the Battle

The battle was a short, intense fight. Four Apache warriors were killed during the attack. We don't know how many were hurt. The miners' side had very few, if any, injuries.

Many Apache warriors had to leave their families behind to escape. Thirteen women and children from the Apache camp were captured by the miners. Chief Mangas Coloradas managed to survive the battle. The American miners were able to get some of their stolen livestock back.
