History of Battleboro
Early Days
Battleboro began in 1835. A person named Joseph S. Battle set up a place called Battle's Camp. This camp was along the Wilmington and Raleigh Railroad. At first, the settlement was entirely in Edgecombe County, North Carolina. But in 1871, the county line changed. It then ran along the railroad. This meant Battle's Camp was in both Edgecombe and Nash counties. In 1873, the community officially became the town of Battleboro.
Growth and Changes
By 1900, Battleboro had 229 residents. The town had a strong economy back then. It had an oil mill, a sawmill, and an ice plant. There was also a music shop and a barbershop. In 1902, a fire destroyed the business area. But the town quickly rebuilt it. By 1990, Battleboro had grown to 447 residents.
In the 1990s, some community members had concerns. They felt there were issues with local authorities. This led to a protest in April 1994. People decided to stop shopping at some local businesses. This protest got attention from news all over the country. It even caused the town's biggest grocery store to close.
Joining Rocky Mount
Over the next few years, many Battleboro residents wanted to join Rocky Mount. They hoped to get cheaper government services. The Battleboro Board of Commissioners did not want to consider this idea. On June 4, 1996, residents voted on joining Rocky Mount. The vote was 132 in favor and 34 against. After Rocky Mount's city council agreed, Battleboro officially joined Rocky Mount. This happened on June 30, 1996. At that time, Battleboro had 523 residents.
Recent Developments
