The Bauernfest (say "BOW-ern-fest") is a big festival that celebrates German traditions. It takes place in the city of Petrópolis, which is in the mountains of the state of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. This festival happens every year, usually in July.
The festival has been around since German people first settled in the area. But it really started to become a big event in the 1900s.

What is Bauernfest?
Since 1989, the Bauernfest has been held every year in the center of Petrópolis. It is the biggest festival in the Petrópolis area. It's also the second largest German festival in all of Brazil! The biggest one is the Oktoberfest of Blumenau, which is in another state called Santa Catarina.

The Bauernfest is very popular! In 2012, about 368,000 people visited the festival. They spent a lot of money, around 55 million Brazilian Reais (which was about 24 million US dollars at the time). During 11 days of celebration, people ate about 7.5 tons of sausage and drank 35,000 liters of beer! It's a truly massive event.
