Baures is a town and a municipality in Bolivia. It is located in the Iténez Province within the Beni Department. A municipality is like a local government area.

The Baures municipality covers a large area of about 16,000 square kilometers. In 2012, about 5,965 people lived there. A small part of the Noel Kempff Mercado National Park is also found in the eastern area of Baures. This park was created in 1979 to protect nature.

History of Baures

Baures was first set up as a Jesuit mission. Jesuit missions were special communities built by Jesuit priests. Father Lorenzo Legarda founded it in 1708. It was named Concepción and was part of the Jesuit Missions of Moxos.

Where is Baures Located?

Baures is found about 150 meters above sea level. It sits on the left bank of the Río Negro, which is a river that flows into the Río Iténez.

The town is about 70 kilometers southeast of Magdalena. Magdalena is the capital of the Iténez Province. Baures is also about 200 kilometers northeast of Trinidad, which is the capital city of the Beni Department.

Nature and Climate

The Baures area is famous for the Kenneth Lee Scientific, Ecological, and Archaeological Reserve. This reserve helps protect nature and important historical sites.

Weather in Baures

The climate in Baures is tropical. This means it's warm all year round, with temperatures staying fairly steady. The average temperature is about 27°C (80°F).

Baures gets a lot of rain, usually more than 1,400 mm each year. There is a wet season from November to March. The dry season is from June to August.

San Simón Mountains

On the eastern edge of the municipality, you'll find the Serranía de San Simón. These mountains are known for having valuable minerals. People have found gold, manganese, and precious stones there.

Most of the people living in Baures belong to the Baure ethnic group. There are also other local groups living there. In 2012, the total population was 5,965 people. Out of these, 2,127 people lived in the main town area.
