Bay Area Open Space Council facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Bay Area Open Space Council was a group of many organizations in the San Francisco Bay Area. These groups included non-profits and public agencies. It started in 1990. Its goal was to help its members share ideas and work together to protect land. The Council's office was in Berkeley, California. Its members came from all nine counties of the San Francisco Bay Area, plus Santa Cruz County.

In March 2020, a new group called Together Bay Area took its place.

What They Did

Protecting Nature's Home

One of the Council's main projects was the Conservation Lands Network. This was a big plan to protect all kinds of plants and animals in the Bay Area. It was part of a five-year study. Over 125 groups and people worked on it. They wanted to find the most important lands to keep nature healthy.

The Conservation Lands Network looked at over 4.3 million acres (17,000 km2) of land. They studied many different things. This included redwood forests and places where the California red-legged frog lives. This project helped protect the Bay Area's amazing nature.

Mapping Protected Lands

The Council also worked with Greeninfo Network. They created a special computer map called the Bay Area Protected Lands Database (BPAD). This map showed all the protected areas in the nine Bay Area counties. In 2010, Santa Cruz County was added to the map too.

Working with Native Americans

The Open Space Council helped make a short film called Here and Now. This film tells stories about four partnerships. These partnerships were between Native American groups and land conservation organizations. The film shows how fairness, protecting land, history, and science can all work together.

Speaking Up for Nature

The Outdoor Voice program encouraged people who visit parks to help protect nature. This program reached all ten Bay Area counties. It focused on getting park users to take action. They used social media to spread the word.
