Bay View used to be called Darbellay.

Discovering Bay View's History

Bay View has an interesting past, even though it is a small community today. It was once known by a different name and played a role in connecting people.

The Original Name: Darbellay

In the 1800s, this community was called Darbellay. It was named after a local resident named Joseph E. Darbellay. He was an important person in the area. Joseph Darbellay was a postmaster, which means he was in charge of the local post office. He was also known as a "fire recovery specialist." This likely meant he helped the community rebuild after fires, which were common in those times.

The First Post Office

A post office was opened in Darbellay on July 8, 1887. This post office was located where County Roads S and SS meet today. A post office was a very important place back then. It was how people sent and received letters, newspapers, and packages. It connected the community to the rest of the world. However, this post office eventually closed its doors in 1902.
