How Teams Qualified
To play in the Olympics, teams had to qualify first. This meant they needed to earn enough points or win special tournaments before the Olympic Games. Only the best teams from around the world made it to Paris!
How the Tournament Worked
The 24 teams were first divided into six groups, with four teams in each group. This part was like a mini-league where every team played against the others in their group.
- The top two teams from each group moved straight to the next stage.
- The two best third-placed teams also got to move on.
- The other four third-placed teams played in a "lucky loser" round. This was a second chance for them to earn one of the last two spots in the knockout stage.
After these first rounds, the tournament became a knockout stage. This means if a team lost a match, they were out of the competition.
When teams played, they earned points:
- A win gave them two match points.
- A loss gave them one match point.
If teams had the same number of match points, special rules were used to decide who ranked higher. This usually involved looking at how many points they scored compared to how many points were scored against them.
Competition Schedule
The beach volleyball tournament had different stages, each with its own schedule. Here's a quick look at when the main parts of the competition happened:
P | Preliminary round | LL | Lucky losers playoffs | 1/8 | Round of 16 | ¼ | Quarterfinals | ½ | Semifinals | B | Bronze medal match | F | Final |
The Teams
Twenty-four teams from different countries qualified for the women's beach volleyball event. Each country could have up to two teams. The first 18 teams were announced in June 2024, and the final spots were filled shortly after.
Preliminary Round Summary
In the preliminary round, teams played matches within their groups. The goal was to win as many matches as possible to get a good ranking. The top teams from each group and some of the best third-placed teams moved on to the knockout stage.
The "lucky loser" playoffs gave a few teams a final chance to advance. These matches were exciting, as teams fought hard to stay in the competition.
Knockout Stage
The knockout stage was where the competition got really intense. Teams played single-elimination matches, meaning one loss sent them home. The matches became more and more important as teams got closer to the medals.
