The volleyball games at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris were held from July 27 to August 11, 2024. Many teams took part in these exciting tournaments. There were 24 indoor volleyball teams and 48 beach volleyball teams.

The indoor volleyball matches happened at Paris Expo Porte de Versailles. The beach volleyball games were played at the Eiffel Tower Stadium in Champ de Mars. Indoor Volleyball Qualification

The International Olympic Committee and Fédération Internationale de Volleyball agreed on how teams would qualify. Twelve teams for men and twelve for women competed in indoor volleyball. As the host country, France automatically got a spot for both their men's and women's teams.

The other teams had two ways to qualify:

  • The top two teams from three special Olympic qualification tournaments earned their spots directly.
  • The last five spots were given to teams based on their world rankings. This also made sure that countries from all continents had a chance to play.

Men's Volleyball Qualification

Getting into the Olympic volleyball tournament is a big deal for teams! For the men's teams playing in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France, the qualification process happened between September 2023 and June 2024. A total of twelve teams earned their spots to compete.

As the host country for the Olympics, France automatically got a spot for its men's team. They were also the champions from the last Olympics, which is pretty cool!

The other eleven spots were decided in two main ways. First, there were three special Olympic qualification tournaments. The top two teams from each of these tournaments earned a direct ticket to Paris. Second, the last five spots were given out based on how well teams were ranked in the FIVB World Rankings in June 2024. This part of the process made sure that teams from different parts of the world had a chance to qualify, especially continents that didn't have a team yet.

Host Country Spot

The FIVB, which is the main group for volleyball, always gives one spot in the Olympic tournament to the country hosting the Games.

  •  FRA – France got a spot because they are hosting the 2024 Summer Olympics. They were also the champions of the 2020 Summer Olympics!

Olympic Qualification Tournaments

These tournaments were a really important way for teams to qualify. The top two teams from each of the three special qualification groups automatically earned their spots for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Teams That Could Play

The FIVB announced which twenty-four teams were allowed to compete in these Olympic qualification tournaments. This list was based on their world rankings from September 12, 2022. There were two exceptions:

  • France didn't need to play because they already qualified as the host nation.
  • Russia was not allowed to play in international competitions at that time.

Here's what the colors in the table mean:

Teams that could play in the Olympic Qualification Tournament
Team that qualified as hosts for the 2024 Summer Olympics
Team that was not allowed to play in international competitions

World Ranking Qualification

After the Olympic Qualification Tournaments, there were still five spots left for the Olympics. These spots were given to the highest-ranked teams in the FIVB world rankings. This happened after the 2024 FIVB Volleyball Men's Nations League was finished.

The FIVB used a special rule called the "universality principle." This means they first looked for teams from continents that didn't have any qualified teams yet. After that, the remaining spots went to the highest-ranked teams overall, no matter which continent they were from.

Here's what the colors in the table mean for the world rankings:

Teams that already qualified for the 2024 Summer Olympics through the Olympic Qualification Tournament
Team that qualified as hosts for the 2024 Summer Olympics
Team that qualified by being the best-ranked team from a continent without a qualified team (Africa)
Teams that qualified through the remaining spots for top World Ranking teams

Beach Volleyball Qualification

Twenty-four men's teams and twenty-four women's teams played in the beach volleyball tournament. Each country could send a maximum of two teams per gender. France, as the host, automatically qualified one men's and one women's beach volleyball team.

The other teams qualified in three main ways:

  • The winners of the 2023 FIVB World Championships (held in Tlaxcala, Mexico) earned a direct spot.
  • The next seventeen highest-ranked teams on the FIVB Olympic ranking list also qualified. This list was based on their best twelve performances between January 2023 and June 2024.
  • The final five spots went to teams from special qualification tournaments held in each of the five continents (Africa, Asia/Oceania, Europe, North/Central America/Caribbean, and South America).

Men's Beach Volleyball Qualification

The men's beach volleyball tournament at the 2024 Paris Olympics will feature 24 teams. These teams, called "pairs" in beach volleyball, come from different countries. Each country can send a maximum of two pairs to the men's tournament.

Teams can qualify in three main ways:

  • Winning the 2023 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships.
  • Having a high rank on the FIVB Olympic Ranking list.
  • Winning one of the five Continental Cup Finals.
