Ukraine first joined the Olympic Games as an independent country in 1994. Since then, Ukrainian athletes have competed in every Summer Olympic Games and Winter Olympic Games. The first athlete to win a gold medal for Ukraine was Oksana Baiul in figure skating.
Before 1994, Ukrainian athletes often competed as part of other teams. They were part of the Russian Empire from 1900 to 1912. Later, they competed for the Soviet Union from 1952 to 1988. After the Soviet Union broke up, Ukrainian athletes joined the "Unified Team" in 1992. Oleg Kutscherenko won a gold medal in Barcelona as part of this team. Tatiana Gutsu was also a top athlete from Ukraine in the Unified Team.
As an independent nation, Ukraine has won a total of 160 Olympic medals. This includes 151 medals from the Summer Games and 9 from the Winter Games. Out of these, 41 are gold medals. This makes Ukraine the second-best post-Soviet country in terms of gold medals, right after Russia.
The sports where Ukraine has won the most medals are Gymnastics in the Summer Olympics and biathlon in the Winter Olympics.
The National Olympic Committee of Ukraine was formed in 1990. The International Olympic Committee officially recognized it in 1993.
