The 2024 Summer Olympics were a big international sports event. They took place in Paris, France, from July 26 to August 11, 2024. Some events started a bit earlier, on July 24.
Athletes from 206 different National Olympic Committees (NOCs) competed. An NOC is like a sports group for each country. There were 329 events across 32 sports. New sports like breaking (also called breakdancing) joined the Olympics. Other sports like skateboarding, sport climbing, and surfing returned after being in the 2020 Summer Olympics.
In total, 92 NOCs won at least one medal. Out of these, 64 countries won at least one gold medal. Some countries won their first ever Olympic gold medals. These included Botswana, Dominica, Guatemala, and Saint Lucia.
Other nations won their first Olympic medals ever. These were Albania, Cape Verde, Dominica, and Saint Lucia. The Refugee Olympic Team also won their first medal.
The United States led the medal count. They won 40 gold medals and 126 medals in total. China also won 40 gold medals, tying with the US. China had 91 total medals, placing second.
Among individual athletes, Chinese swimmer Zhang Yufei won the most medals. She got six medals (one silver, five bronze). French swimmer Léon Marchand won the most gold medals with four.
Olympic Medals
The medals for the 2024 Paris Olympics were special. The President of the Paris 2024 Organizing Committee, Tony Estanguet, showed them in February 2024.
Each medal had a unique piece of scrap iron from the original Eiffel Tower built into it. The Games' logo was also carved into the medal. About 5,084 medals were made by the French mint called Monnaie de Paris. A fancy jewelry company from Paris, Chaumet, designed them.
On the back of the medals, you could see Nike. She is the Greek goddess of victory. She was shown inside the Panathenaic Stadium. This stadium hosted the first modern Olympics in 1896. The Parthenon and the Eiffel Tower were also in the background.
Each medal weighed between 455 and 529 grams. They were 85 millimeters wide and 9.2 millimeters thick. Gold medals were mostly silver (98.8 percent) with a little bit of gold (1.13 percent). Bronze medals were made from copper, zinc, and tin.
Medal Table Rules
The medal table lists all the countries that won medals. It is put together by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The table is usually sorted in a specific way.
First, countries are ranked by how many gold medals they won. If two countries have the same number of gold medals, then the number of silver medals is checked. If they are still tied, the number of bronze medals is used. If there is still a tie, the countries are listed in alphabetical order by their country code.
In some sports, like boxing, two bronze medals are given out. This happens when the two athletes who lose their semi-final matches both get a bronze. They do not have to fight each other for third place. Other fighting sports, such as judo, taekwondo, and wrestling, also give out two bronze medals.
Sometimes, ties can happen in other events too. For example, in the men's 100-meter breaststroke, two silver medals were given because of a tie. No bronze medal was awarded in that case. In the women's high jump, men's horizontal bar, and women's K-2 500 meters, two bronze medals were given because of ties.

Changes in Medal Standings
Sometimes, medal results can change even after the event. This happened in the women's floor exercises.
The bronze medal was first given to Jordan Chiles from the USA. However, the Romanian Federation made an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. They argued about a score inquiry that had put Chiles ahead of Romanian gymnast Ana Bărbosu. On August 11, 2024, the International Gymnastics Federation changed the result. They gave the third-place bronze medal back to Ana Bărbosu.
