Wrestling is a very old sport where two people try to control each other using holds and moves. It's a big part of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. These exciting competitions took place from August 5 to 11, 2024. The venue for these matches was the Grand Palais Éphémère in Champ de Mars.
About 288 wrestlers from all over the world competed. They wrestled in 18 different weight groups. Men competed in two styles: freestyle and Greco-Roman. Women only competed in freestyle wrestling. In total, 18 gold medals were given out. Wrestling has been in almost every modern Summer Olympic Games. The only time it wasn't included was in Paris in 1900.
A famous wrestler named Mijaín López made history at these Games. He won his fifth gold medal in a row in the same event. This was in the Greco-Roman 130 kg category. He is the first athlete to do this in modern Olympic history!

How Wrestling Competitions Work
In each wrestling weight group, 16 wrestlers compete. The competition is a single-elimination tournament. This means if you lose a match, you are usually out.
- The two wrestlers who win all their matches go on to compete for the gold and silver medals.
- Wrestlers who lose to one of the two finalists get another chance. This is called the repechage round.
- The repechage helps decide who wins the two bronze medals. The losers from the semifinals wrestle against other repechage opponents.
- Finally, two bronze medal matches are held.
How Wrestlers Qualify for the Olympics
To compete in the Paris 2024 Olympics, wrestlers had to earn their spots. There were 288 spots available for wrestlers. Each country could only send one wrestler per weight group. The host country, France, did not get any automatic spots in wrestling.
The qualification process happened in a few stages:
- 2023 World Wrestling Championships: This was the first chance to qualify. It happened in September 2023 in Belgrade, Serbia. The top four medalists (gold, silver, and two bronze) in each of the 18 weight groups earned a spot. An extra spot was given to the winner of a match between two bronze-medal match losers.
- Continental Qualification Tournaments: In early 2024, four big tournaments were held. These were for Asia, Europe, the Americas, and a combined Africa & Oceania event. In each of these, the top two wrestlers in each weight group earned a spot. This added 144 more spots.
- 2024 World Qualification Tournament: The last spots were given out at this tournament. The top two wrestlers in each weight group qualified. Another spot was given to the winner of a special match between two bronze medalists.
