Ana Maria Bărbosu (born 26 July 2006) is a talented Romanian gymnast. She won a bronze medal in the floor exercise at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. Ana is also a six-time European junior champion. She won all junior events at the 2020 European Championships, including the team event. She has also won the all-around title three times at the Romanian National Championships.

Ana Bărbosu's Junior Gymnastics Journey

Ana Maria Bărbosu began her gymnastics training at just 3 years old. She started in Focșani, Romania, with her coach Daniela Trandafir.

Early Competitions (2017-2019)

In 2017, Ana competed in the Junior II Level 3 division at the Romanian Junior Championships. She placed fourth in the all-around. She also won a silver medal on balance beam and a bronze on floor.

In 2019, Ana had a very successful year. She won gold medals at the Petrom Cup and the Romanian Junior Championships. At the senior Championships, she earned bronze medals in the all-around and on floor. She nearly won every event at the Romanian Individual Championships.

Ana made her international debut in November 2019. She won gold with the Romanian team at the Swiss Cup. She also won the all-around title there. She continued her success at the Horizon Cup in Greece. She finished her international junior season at Top Gym in Belgium. There, she won a silver medal in the all-around. She also earned silver on floor and bronze on beam and bars.

European Junior Champion (2020)

The year 2020 was challenging due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Ana still shined at the Romanian Championships. She won the silver medal in the combined all-around final. She was the top-placing junior gymnast. She also swept all the event titles in the junior division.

Ana was chosen for the 2020 European Junior Championships. At this event, she led the Romanian team to a gold medal. Individually, she won the all-around title by a large margin. She also qualified first into all four event finals. Ana then won gold medals in all four of those event finals! This made her a six-time European junior champion.

Continued Success (2021)

In 2021, Ana continued to perform well. At the Romanian Championships, she won gold on uneven bars. She also took silver in the all-around and on floor. Later that year, she competed at the Top Gym Tournament in Belgium. She won the all-around title there. She also earned gold medals on uneven bars and balance beam.

At the European Championships in Munich, Ana finished seventh in the all-around. She also helped Romania qualify a full team for the 2022 World Championships. In October, she won three gold medals at the Mersin Challenge Cup. At the 2022 World Championships in Liverpool, Ana finished 20th in the all-around final.

Olympic Qualification (2023)

In 2023, Ana competed at the European Championships. She helped Romania finish fifth as a team. She also won her second Romanian national all-around title.

Later that year, Ana competed at the 2023 World Championships. The Romanian team finished tenth. This was important because it qualified a team for the 2024 Olympic Games. This was the first time Romania qualified a full team since 2012! Ana also finished twenty-third in the all-around final.

Olympic Medalist (2024)

In April 2024, Ana competed at the European Championships. The Romanian team placed fourth.

At the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, Ana was part of the Romanian team. They qualified for the team finals, which was a big achievement. The team finished seventh in the finals. Ana also qualified for the all-around and floor exercise finals. She placed seventeenth in the all-around.

In the floor exercise final, Ana scored 13.700. This placed her third at the end of the competition. However, another gymnast's score was reviewed and changed. This moved Ana to fourth place.

Ana then appealed this decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). She argued that the score review happened too late. The CAS agreed with Ana. They ruled that the original score should be put back. This meant Ana was back in third place. The International Olympic Committee then officially awarded the bronze medal to Ana. On August 16, Ana received her Olympic bronze medal in her hometown of Focșani.
