Ana Maria Bărbosu (born 26 July 2006) is a talented Romanian gymnast. She won a bronze medal in the floor exercise at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

Ana is also the 2025 European floor exercise champion. She earned a bronze medal in the all-around competition at the same event. Before becoming a senior gymnast, she was a six-time European junior champion. She won every junior event at the 2020 European Championships, including the team event. Ana Bărbosu has also won the Romanian national all-around title three times.

Ana Bărbosu was born in Focșani, Romania, in 2006. She started learning gymnastics when she was four years old.

In June 2025, Ana took her high school final exams, called the Baccalaureate. She achieved the highest score in her entire high school class.

Junior Gymnastics Achievements

Starting Her Junior Career

In 2017, Ana competed in junior events at the Romanian Junior Championships. She finished fourth in the all-around competition. She also won a silver medal on the balance beam and a bronze medal on the floor exercise.

Success in 2019

Ana had a very successful year in 2019. She won gold medals in the all-around at the Petrom Cup and the Junior Romanian Championships. At the senior Championships, she earned a bronze medal in the all-around and on floor.

She almost won every event at the Romanian Individual Championships. She took home gold medals in the all-around, uneven bars, balance beam, and floor. She also won a silver medal on vault.

Ana made her international debut in November 2019. She won gold with the Romanian team and in the all-around at the Swiss Cup. She also won the all-around title at the Horizon Cup in Greece. Later, at the Top Gym competition in Belgium, she won a silver medal in the all-around. She also earned silver on floor and bronze on beam and bars.

European Junior Champion in 2020

The year 2020 had fewer international competitions because of the COVID-19 pandemic. At the Romanian Championships, Ana won a silver medal in the all-around. She was the highest-placing junior gymnast. In the junior division, she won gold in the all-around and on every single event.

Ana was chosen to represent Romania at the 2020 European Junior Championships. There, she helped the Romanian team win a gold medal. Individually, she won the all-around title by a large margin. She also qualified first for all four event finals. Ana then went on to win gold medals in all four of those event finals. This made her a six-time European junior champion!

Junior Highlights in 2021

At the Romanian Championships in September 2021, Ana won a gold medal on the uneven bars. She also took silver medals in the all-around and on floor. In November, she competed at the Top Gym Tournament in Belgium. She won the all-around title there, along with gold medals on uneven bars and balance beam.

Ana became old enough to compete as a senior gymnast in 2022. She made her senior debut at the City of Jesolo Trophy. She then competed at the Osijek World Challenge Cup. There, she won a gold medal on floor exercise and a bronze medal on balance beam.

At the European Championships in Munich, Ana finished seventh in the all-around. She also placed fourth on floor and eighth on balance beam. Her performance helped Romania qualify a full team for the 2022 World Championships. In October, Ana won gold medals on uneven bars, balance beam, and floor exercise at the Mersin Challenge Cup. At the 2022 World Championships in Liverpool, she finished 20th in the all-around final.

2023 Season

Ana competed at the 2023 European Championships. She helped Romania finish fifth as a team. Individually, she placed ninth in the all-around and seventh on floor exercise.

At the RomGym Trophy, she won gold with her team and in the all-around. She also won gold on uneven bars and silver on balance beam. Later in the year, Ana won her second Romanian national all-around title. She also earned a gold medal on the uneven bars.

Ana finished 2023 at the 2023 World Championships. The Romanian team finished tenth, which was enough to qualify a team for the 2024 Olympic Games. This was the first time Romania had qualified a full team for the Olympics since 2012. Ana finished twenty-third in the all-around final at the World Championships.

Olympic Bronze in 2024

In April 2024, Ana competed at the 2024 European Championships. The Romanian team finished fourth, and Ana placed fourth on vault. In June, she won a silver medal in the all-around at the RomGym Trophy. She also won a gold medal on vault.

At the 2024 Olympic Games, Ana was part of the Romanian team that reached the team finals. This was the first time in twelve years for Romania. The team finished seventh in the finals. Ana also qualified for the individual all-around and floor exercise finals. She placed seventeenth in the all-around final.

In the floor exercise final, Ana initially placed fourth. However, after a review by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), it was decided that a score change for another gymnast was made too late. The CAS ruled that Ana should be given the bronze medal. The International Olympic Committee then officially awarded her the bronze medal.

Ana shared a message on Instagram after the decision. She said her thoughts were with the other gymnasts involved. She also said that athletes should not be blamed for rule issues. On August 16, 2024, Ana was officially given her Olympic bronze medal in her hometown of Focșani.

2025 Season

In early 2025, Ana announced that she would compete in NCAA gymnastics for the Stanford Cardinal team in the United States.

Ana returned to competition at the 2025 City of Jesolo Trophy. She won silver medals on balance beam and floor exercise. She was then chosen to compete at the European Championships. During the qualification round, which also counted as the team competition, Ana helped Romania finish fourth. She also qualified for the all-around, balance beam, and floor exercise finals.

In the all-around final, Ana won the bronze medal. This was the first all-around medal for a Romanian gymnast in 12 years. She also won a bronze medal on uneven bars, becoming the first Romanian to medal on this event since 2008. On the last day of the competition, Ana won a silver medal on balance beam. She also became the European Champion on floor exercise, winning a gold medal.
