Boxing at the 2024 Summer Olympics facts for kids
Boxing was a big part of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. The exciting matches happened from July 27 to August 10. Early boxing rounds took place at Arena Paris Nord. The final fights, where medals were won, were held at the famous Roland Garros Stadium.
The boxing program in Paris had 13 different weight classes, just like the last three Olympics. To make things fair for both boys and girls, the number of events was changed. There were 7 weight classes for men and 6 for women. This was different from the last Olympics, which had 8 for men and 5 for women.
In 2022, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided that the International Boxing Association (IBA) could not organize the Olympic boxing event. This was because of problems with how the IBA was run. So, the IOC created a new way for boxers to qualify for the Paris 2024 Games. Boxers earned their spots by doing well in big sports events across different continents. These included the Asian Games, European Games, Pan American Games, African Games, and Pacific Games.
Uzbekistan won the most boxing medals, taking home five gold medals, all in men's events. China came in second with three gold medals, all won by women.

What were the Boxing Weight Classes?
The 2024 Paris Olympics made some changes to the boxing weight classes. This was done to make sure there was more equality between men and women athletes. One men's weight class, the Middleweight division, was removed. This meant men competed in seven weight classes instead of eight.
For women, a new Bantamweight category was added. This increased the women's weight classes from five to six.
Here are the seven weight classes for male boxers:
- Flyweight (51 kg)
- Featherweight (57 kg)
- Lightweight (63.5 kg)
- Welterweight (71 kg)
- Light heavyweight (80 kg)
- Heavyweight (92 kg)
- Super heavyweight (+92 kg)
Here are the six weight classes for female boxers:
- Flyweight (50 kg)
- Bantamweight (54 kg)
- Featherweight (57 kg)
- Lightweight (60 kg)
- Welterweight (66 kg)
- Middleweight (75 kg)
How Did Boxers Qualify?
A total of 248 boxers earned a spot in Paris 2024. This was about 40 fewer boxers than at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The spots were split equally between men and women. Each country could only send one boxer for each weight class.
France, as the host country, automatically got six spots. These were split evenly between men and women. Also, nine spots were given to countries that needed extra help to send their athletes. This is called the Universality principle.
Boxers started qualifying at five big regional sports events. These events were held in Africa, Asia, Europe, the Pacific, and the Americas. A total of 139 spots were given out at these events to the top-ranked boxers. After these regional events, the remaining spots were decided at two world qualification tournaments. The IOC organized these tournaments in early 2024. The best boxers at these events also earned their places in the Olympics.
