Cindy's Journey
Cindy Ngamba was born in Cameroon. When she was 11 years old, she moved to the United Kingdom. She faced some challenges with her immigration status while living there. Despite these difficulties, Cindy worked hard and earned a university degree. She studied Crime and Criminal Justice at the University of Bolton.
Because of laws in her home country, Cindy cannot safely return to Cameroon. This situation led her to represent the Refugee Olympic Team. This team gives athletes who cannot compete for their home countries a chance to participate in the Olympics.
Amateur Boxing Career
Cindy trained with GB Boxing, which is the national boxing team for Great Britain. However, she could not compete for Great Britain because she did not have a British passport. Even so, she showed great skill in the sport.
Winning Championships
Cindy won British National Amateur Championships in three different weight categories. This made her the first woman since Natasha Jonas to achieve this impressive feat. In 2023, she won a boxing event called Bocskai in Hungary. She also competed in the under 75kg event for the EOC Refugee Team at the 2023 European Games.
Road to the Olympics
Cindy competed for the Refugee Olympic Team in the 2024 World Boxing Olympic Qualification Tournament. She successfully qualified for the Summer Olympics in Paris. On 2 May 2024, Cindy was officially named to the Refugee Olympic Team. This made her the first boxer ever chosen for this special team. She was also chosen to be one of the flag-bearers for the Refugee Olympic Team. She carried the flag with Syrian Taekwondo athlete Yahya Al-Ghotany during the opening ceremony.
Olympic Success
At the 2024 Paris Olympics, Cindy had some tough fights. In her first match, she fought Tammara Thibeault from Canada. Tammara was a gold medalist from the 2022 World Boxing Championships. Cindy won this fight with a close score of 3:2.
Next, she faced Davina Michel from France in the quarter-finals. Davina had won a bronze medal at the 2022 World Championship. Cindy won this fight by a unanimous decision, meaning all the judges agreed she won. This victory guaranteed her at least a bronze medal. It also made her the first person to win an Olympic medal for the Refugee Olympic Team. In the semi-finals, she fought Atheyna Bylon from Panama. Cindy lost this fight by a score of 4:1, earning her the bronze medal.
Professional Boxing Career
After her amazing Olympic performance, Cindy decided to become a professional boxer. This means she now competes for money and makes boxing her full-time job. She signed a contract with a company called Boxxer in January 2025.
Cindy was scheduled to have her first professional fight against Kirstie Bavington. This fight was planned for 7 March 2025, at the Royal Albert Hall in London. However, Cindy had to withdraw from the fight the day before. This was due to an issue found during her pre-fight medical check.
