Romania first joined the Olympic Games way back in 1900. Only one person from Romania took part that year. The group in charge of sports for Romania is called the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee. It was started and recognized in 1914.
Romania first sent a full team to the Games in 1924. Since then, they have only missed two Summer Olympic Games and two Winter Olympic Games. A cool fact is that Romania was the only country from the Eastern Bloc to go to the 1984 Summer Olympics. Other countries from that group decided not to go. The 1984 Games were Romania's most successful Olympics ever! They won 20 gold medals and 53 medals in total.
Gymnastics is the sport where Romania has won the most medals. Romania has won the third highest number of medals among countries that have never hosted the Olympic Games. Only Hungary and Poland have won more.

Romania's Olympic Journey
From the 1972 Summer Olympics until the 2012 Summer Olympics, Romania always had a women's team in gymnastics. They won medals in gymnastics at every Olympics from 1976 to 2012.
However, the women's gymnastics team did not qualify for the 2016 Summer Olympics. This ended their amazing 40-year streak of winning medals. It also ended their 44-year run of having a team at the Olympics.
At the Winter Olympics, Romania has only won one medal. This happened at the 1968 Winter Olympics. It was won by a two-man bobsleigh team. The team was led by Ion Panțuru and Nicolae Neagoe.
