1906 Intercalated Games

Hungary first joined the Olympic Games in 1896, right at the start! Since then, Hungarian athletes have competed in almost all Summer Olympic Games and every Winter Olympic Games. Hungary was not invited to the 1920 Games because of World War I. They also did not take part in the 1984 Summer Olympics due to a boycott led by the Soviet Union.

Hungarian athletes have won many medals! They have earned 530 medals at the Summer Games and 10 medals at the Winter Games. Fencing is their strongest sport for winning medals. Hungary ranks 8th in Summer Games medals and 13th overall for both Summer and Winter Games. Hungary has won more Olympic medals than any other country that has never hosted the Games. After the 2020 Olympic Games, Hungary became the country with the most gold medals per person at the Summer Olympics. This means they win a lot of medals for their population size! In the 1956 and 1980 Winter Olympics, every Hungarian athlete who competed won a medal.

The official group for the Olympics in Hungary is the Hungarian Olympic Committee. It was started and recognized in 1895.
