György Kárpáti (born June 23, 1935 – died June 17, 2020) was a famous Hungarian water polo player. He was one of the best water polo players in the world.

Kárpáti competed in four Summer Olympics between 1952 and 1964. He won an amazing three gold medals and one bronze medal. This makes him one of the few athletes to win so many Olympic medals in water polo.

Olympic Achievements

György Kárpáti was a key player for the Hungarian national team. He helped his team achieve great success at the Olympic Games.

1952 Helsinki Olympics

Kárpáti won his first Olympic gold medal at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki. He played in five matches during the tournament. He also scored four goals for his team.

1956 Melbourne Olympics

Four years later, Kárpáti and the Hungarian team won gold again. This happened at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne. He played in six matches and scored at least six goals. This was another big win for Hungary.

1960 Rome Olympics

At the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, Kárpáti won a bronze medal. The Hungarian team played well and earned a spot on the podium. Kárpáti played in four matches and scored five goals.

1964 Tokyo Olympics

His final Olympic appearance was at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Here, he won his third Olympic gold medal. He played six matches and scored four goals. This was a fantastic end to his Olympic playing career.

Life After Playing

After his successful playing career, György Kárpáti continued to be involved in water polo.

Coaching Career

Kárpáti studied and earned a degree in law. However, he chose not to work as a lawyer. Instead, he got a degree in coaching in 1964. From 1970 to 1980, he worked as an assistant coach. He helped the national team alongside head coach Dezső Gyarmati. Together, they led the team to win a gold medal at the 1976 Summer Olympics.

Recognition and Awards

In 1982, György Kárpáti was honored for his achievements. He was chosen to be part of the International Swimming Hall of Fame. This is a special place for the greatest swimmers and water polo players. From 1994, he also became a member of the Association of Immortal Hungarian Athletes.

Personal Life

György Kárpáti was born into a Jewish family. He was good friends with the famous Italian actor and former water polo player, Bud Spencer.

Passing Away

György Kárpáti passed away on June 17, 2020, at the age of 84. He had been ill for a long time. He was buried on July 2, 2020, in the Farkasréti Cemetery.
