The International Swimming Hall of Fame and Museum (often called ISHOF) is a special place in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA. It's like a museum and a hall of fame all in one! ISHOF helps us learn about the amazing history of swimming and other water sports around the world. It celebrates the people who have been super important in these sports.
ISHOF has many cool things to see. You can find ancient art and new art showing famous moments in swimming. There are also old swimsuits, items about civil rights, and special things that belonged to famous swimmers and divers. The FINA organization, which is a big group for water sports, says ISHOF is the official hall of fame for aquatic sports.

History of ISHOF
How the Hall of Fame Started
The International Swimming Hall of Fame started on November 23, 1964. Buck Dawson was its first leader. In August 1965, a big swimming complex was finished. This included a 50-meter pool and a diving area.
On December 27, 1965, this new complex was officially opened. About 4,500 people came to see it. They were from all over the USA and eleven other countries.
Becoming World Famous
In 1968, something very important happened. The FINA Congress, which includes 105 countries, met at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City. They agreed that ISHOF was an "International Swimming Hall of Fame." This made it the first world-recognized hall of fame for any sport!
On June 16, 1969, the name was officially changed to "International Swimming Hall of Fame." The first group of twenty-one amazing people were added to the Hall of Fame in 1965. You can see the full list of all honorees who have been honored since then.
Working Together
In 2017, ISHOF joined forces with Swimming World Magazine. This partnership helps ISHOF reach more athletes, coaches, and volunteers around the world. Brent Rutemiller became the Chief Executive Officer to lead this new team.
What Does ISHOF Do?
ISHOF's main goal is to work with water sports groups everywhere. They want to save, teach, and celebrate the history of swimming, diving, and other water sports. They also help promote a program called Every Child A Swimmer. This program works to make sure all children learn to swim before kindergarten. This helps prevent childhood drowning.
ISHOF also wants to be a global center for sharing cultures through water sports. They aim to show exciting events and get more people involved in aquatic activities. They also create lessons and programs that teach swimming as a very important life skill.
Who Can Be Honored?
A special committee helps choose who gets into the Hall of Fame. They look at people in 9 different categories:
- Swimming
- Open Water/Marathon Swimming
- Diving
- Water Polo
- Artistic Swimming (Synchronized Swimming)
- Paralympics
- Coach
- Contributor (someone who helps water sports in other ways)
- Pioneer (someone who did something new or important early on)
You can find out how to suggest someone on the ISHOF website.
