The 2023 FIVB Volleyball Men's Olympic Qualification Tournaments were exciting volleyball competitions. Twenty-four national men's teams from the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) played in three different tournaments. The main goal was to earn a spot in the 2024 Summer Olympics. The top two teams from each group qualified for the Olympics. The tournament held in Japan was also known as the 2023 Volleyball Men's World Cup.

Host Cities for the Tournaments

On October 16, 2022, the FIVB announced that Japan would host one of the tournaments. Japan has a tradition of hosting these events, often calling them the World Cup. Later, on March 8, 2023, the FIVB confirmed that Brazil and China would host the other two men's tournaments.

How Teams Qualified

The 2023 Olympic Qualification Tournaments included the 24 best teams that had not yet qualified for the Olympics. These teams were chosen based on the FIVB Senior World Rankings from September 12, 2022. One country, Russia, was not allowed to compete due to the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.

How Teams Were Grouped

The 24 teams were divided into three groups, called "pools," with eight teams in each. The host countries (Brazil, Japan, and China) were placed in different pools based on their world rankings. The remaining teams were then sorted into groups based on their FIVB Senior World Rankings from January 1, 2023.

The drawing of lots ceremony, where teams found out which pool they were in, happened in Lausanne, Switzerland, on March 17, 2023.

How Teams Were Ranked

Teams in each pool were ranked based on these rules:

  • 1. Total Wins: The team with more wins ranked higher.
  • 2. Match Points: If teams had the same number of wins, points were used:

* Winning 3-0 or 3-1: 3 points for the winner, 0 for the loser. * Winning 3-2: 2 points for the winner, 1 for the loser.

  • 3. Set Quotient: If teams were still tied, they were ranked by dividing the number of sets won by the number of sets lost.
  • 4. Point Quotient: If still tied, they were ranked by dividing total points scored by total points lost.
  • 5. Head-to-Head: If a tie remained between two teams, the team that won their match against each other ranked higher. If three or more teams were tied, only their matches against each other were considered.
