Cuba first took part in the Olympic Games way back in 1900. Since then, Cuban athletes have competed in 22 out of 29 Summer Olympic Games, right up to the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Cuban athletes have never competed in the Winter Olympic Games. Even without participating in the Winter Olympics, Cuba is the most successful Olympic team among nations that have never joined the Winter Games. They have won the most gold and total medals.

Cuba is second among all American countries for Summer Olympics gold medals, only behind the United States. They have also won more medals than any other country in Latin America. Cuba has never hosted the Olympics, but they have won the fourth highest number of total medals among countries that have never hosted the Games.

The official group for the Olympics in Cuba is the Cuban Olympic Committee (which is Comité Olímpico Cubano in Spanish). It was started in 1926 and recognized by the International Olympic Committee in 1954.

Sports Where Cuba Excels

Fencing

When Cuba first joined the Olympics in 1900, they sent one fencer named Ramón Fonst. He won a gold medal in the men's amateur épée event and a silver medal in another fencing competition. Fonst won another gold medal in épée in 1904. The Olympic Committee also gives Cuba credit for two other medals in the 1904 épée event, even though those athletes were from the United States.

Games Fencers Events Gold Silver Bronze Total
1900 Paris 1 2/7 1 1 0 2
Total 5 5 6 16

Boxing

Cuba has a population of just over 11 million people, but they are incredibly strong in Olympic boxing! They have won the second-highest number of Olympic medals in boxing, with a total of 41 gold medals and 78 medals overall. This amazing success comes from Cuba's strong boxing culture, great training programs for young athletes, special support for sports, and investments in sports facilities. All of these things help develop world-class boxers.
