Argentina first joined the Olympic Games way back in 1900. Since then, they've been part of almost every Summer Olympics. The only times they missed out were in 1904, 1912, and in 1980. In 1980, they chose not to go to the Moscow Olympics to support the United States. Argentina also started competing in the Winter Olympics in 1928, and has been there regularly since 1960.

Did you know Argentina was one of the 12 countries that helped start the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1894? This is a big deal, as they were the only country from Latin America to be a founding member! Argentina's own Olympic Committee was officially recognized in 1923.

Argentina had a really strong period in the Olympics from 1924 to 1952. During these years, they won at least one gold medal in every single Olympic event. That's pretty impressive!

After 1952, Argentina's medal count started to slow down. In the 1976 and 1984 Summer Olympics, they didn't win any medals at all. But things turned around at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. For the first time in 52 years, Argentina won gold medals again! However, in 2004, their neighbor Brazil took over as the South American country with the most gold and total medals.

The 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil saw Argentina send its biggest team ever, with 213 athletes. They won three gold medals, which was their best result since 1948. One of these gold medals was also the first ever won by an Argentine woman!

Overall, Argentine athletes have won 80 medals at the Summer Olympic Games. A large number of these, 24 medals, have come from boxing. This makes boxing their most successful sport. Argentina has not yet won any medals at the Winter Olympic Games.

In 2018, the city of Buenos Aires hosted the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics.
