Carlos Alberto Tevez (born 5 February 1984), whose birth name was Martínez, is an Argentine football manager and former player. He was a very energetic and skilled forward during his playing days. Tevez could play in many attacking roles, like a main striker, a winger, or a supporting forward. He is currently the head coach for the Argentine Primera División club Talleres.

Tevez started his amazing career with Boca Juniors in Argentina. There, he won important titles like the Copa Libertadores and the Intercontinental Cup in 2003. After that, he moved to the Brazilian club Corinthians and won the league title there. He then played for English clubs West Ham United and Manchester United. At Manchester United, he won six trophies, including two Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League.

In 2009, Tevez joined Manchester City, who were rivals of Manchester United. He continued to be a top player, winning the Premier League Golden Boot in the 2010–11 season. He also won another Premier League title with Manchester City in 2011–12. Later, he moved to Juventus in Italy, where he won two Italian league titles (called Scudetti). He returned to Boca Juniors in 2015, then played for Shanghai Shenhua in China, becoming one of the highest-paid players in the world. He came back to Boca Juniors for a third time in 2018 and won two more Argentine league titles.

Tevez also played for the Argentina national team from 2004 to 2015. He played 76 games and scored 13 goals for his country. He won a gold medal at the 2004 Olympic Games and was the top scorer there. He also played in two FIFA World Cups and four Copa América tournaments. Tevez has won many individual awards, including the South American Footballer of the Year three times. He announced his retirement from playing football in June 2022.

Early Life and Background

Carlos Tevez was born Carlos Alberto Martínez. He grew up in a neighborhood in Argentina known as "Fuerte Apache". This is where he got his famous nickname, "El Apache." He was adopted by his aunt and her husband, who changed his last name to Tevez.

Carlos has a special burn scar on his neck and chest. He got it from an accident with boiling water when he was a baby. He spent almost two months in the hospital. Later, when he joined Boca Juniors, the club offered to help him get surgery to improve the scars. But Carlos said no. He felt the scars were a part of his story and who he is.

His early life was even made into a TV show in 2019 called Apache: The Life of Carlos Tevez.

Club Career Highlights

Starting at Boca Juniors

Carlos Tevez started his professional football journey at Boca Juniors when he was 16 years old. His first game was on 21 October 2001. In his first season, he scored one goal in 11 league games.

He quickly became a key player. In 2003, Boca Juniors won the Copa Libertadores, which is a huge South American club competition. Tevez scored in the final and was named the best player of the tournament. Later that year, Boca Juniors also won the Intercontinental Cup by beating Milan in a penalty shootout. Tevez helped Boca win the Argentine league title in 2003.

In 2004, Boca Juniors won the Copa Sudamericana. Tevez scored in the final to help his team win. He was a very important player for Boca Juniors, and many people saw him as a possible future star, like Diego Maradona.

Moving to Corinthians

In January 2005, Tevez moved to the Brazilian club Corinthians. This was a very big transfer for South American football at the time. He quickly made an impact, scoring his first goal in February.

Tevez became the team captain and led Corinthians to win the Brazilian league title in 2005. He scored 20 goals that season and was named the league's best player. He was the first non-Brazilian player to win this award since 1976.

However, in 2006, Tevez had some disagreements with fans and the new manager. He decided he wanted to leave the club. Despite these issues, he left a strong legacy at Corinthians. Many fans still remember him as one of the club's best players in the 21st century.

Time at West Ham United

On 31 August 2006, Tevez and his teammate Javier Mascherano joined West Ham United in England. Tevez made his debut in September. West Ham struggled at first, going many games without a win or a goal.

Tevez scored his first goal for West Ham on 4 March 2007. He became very important for the team, especially towards the end of the season. In April 2007, he was named the club's "Hammer of the Year" (their best player).

In the last game of the season, West Ham needed to win to stay in the Premier League. Tevez scored the only goal in a 1–0 victory against Manchester United. This win saved West Ham from being relegated (moving down to a lower league).

There was a big discussion about his transfer to West Ham because of rules about player ownership. West Ham was fined a large amount of money, but Tevez was allowed to keep playing. This situation led to changes in football rules.

Playing for Manchester United

In August 2007, Tevez joined Manchester United on a two-year loan. He quickly became a fan favorite. He scored his first goal against Chelsea in September. The manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, praised him, saying he would score many important goals.

Tevez helped Manchester United win the Premier League title in both the 2007–08 and 2008–09 seasons. He also played a big part in their 2007–08 UEFA Champions League victory, scoring five goals in the competition. He even scored the first penalty in the shootout during the Champions League final against Chelsea, which United won.

In December 2008, he scored four goals in a League Cup match against Blackburn Rovers. He also helped United win the 2008 FIFA Club World Cup. Despite his good performances, there were discussions about whether he would sign a permanent contract. In May 2009, he left Manchester United.

Moving to Manchester City

After leaving Manchester United, Tevez made a big move to their city rivals, Manchester City, in July 2009. This was a very talked-about transfer. He was the first player to move directly between the two Manchester clubs in many years.

Tevez quickly started scoring for Manchester City. He scored his first Premier League goals for the club against his old team, West Ham. He had a fantastic first season, scoring many goals and winning two club awards: the Etihad Player of the Year and the Players' Player of the Year.

In August 2010, manager Roberto Mancini made Tevez the club captain. He continued his excellent goal-scoring form in the 2010–11 season. He won the Premier League Golden Boot for being the top scorer in the league that season. He also helped Manchester City win the FA Cup in 2011, which was a big trophy for the club.

In September 2011, there was a disagreement between Tevez and manager Roberto Mancini during a match against Bayern Munich. Mancini said Tevez refused to come on as a substitute. Tevez denied this, calling it a misunderstanding. He was suspended by the club for a while. However, he later apologized and returned to the team in March 2012.

Tevez played a crucial role in Manchester City winning the Premier League title in the 2011–12 season. He scored a hat-trick against Norwich City and helped City win the league on the very last day of the season. He also won the FA Community Shield with City in 2012.

Success at Juventus

In June 2013, Tevez signed a three-year contract with Juventus in Italy. He was given the number 10 shirt, which was a special number at the club, previously worn by legendary player Alessandro Del Piero.

Tevez made an immediate impact, scoring in his first competitive game for Juventus in August 2013. He also scored in his first Serie A match. In December 2013, he scored his first hat-trick for Juventus. He finished the 2013–14 season as the team's top scorer with 21 goals and was named Juventus's "Player of the Season." Juventus won their 30th Italian league title that year.

In the 2014–15 season, Tevez continued his great form. He scored his first goals in the UEFA Champions League since 2009. He helped Juventus reach the Champions League final in 2015, where they lost to Barcelona. He scored 20 goals in Serie A that season, helping Juventus win their fourth consecutive league title. He also won the Coppa Italia with Juventus in 2015.

Returning to Boca Juniors (Twice!)

In June 2015, Tevez made an emotional return to his first club, Boca Juniors. He wanted to fulfill his dream of winning the Argentine league title with them. He quickly made an impact, scoring 9 goals in 15 matches. In 2015, he achieved his goal, winning both the Argentine Primera División and the Copa Argentina with Boca Juniors. This made him the first player to win two league and cup doubles in one year!

He continued to play well in 2016, scoring important goals in the Copa Libertadores and in the famous Superclásico match against rivals River Plate.

In December 2016, Tevez moved to the Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua. Reports said he became one of the highest-paid footballers in the world. He scored on his league debut in March 2017. However, his time in China was short, and he later described it as a "holiday."

On 5 January 2018, Tevez returned to Boca Juniors for a third time. He continued to add to his trophy collection, winning the Argentine league title in 2017–18 and 2019–20. On 4 June 2021, Tevez announced he was leaving Boca Juniors. He said he was physically fit but not mentally ready to continue playing for the club. In June 2022, he officially announced his retirement from professional football. He mentioned that the passing of his father in 2021, who was his "number one fan," influenced his decision.

International Career for Argentina

Tevez first gained attention playing for Argentina's youth teams. At the 2004 Olympic Games in Greece, he won a gold medal with the Argentina team. This was Argentina's first gold medal in football since 1952! Tevez was also the top scorer of the tournament with eight goals in six matches.

He played for the senior Argentina team starting in 2004. He played in the 2004 Copa América and the 2005 FIFA Confederations Cup, where Argentina finished as runners-up in both.

Tevez was part of Argentina's squad for the 2006 FIFA World Cup. He scored one goal in the tournament against Serbia and Montenegro. He also played in the 2007 Copa América, where Argentina again reached the final.

He was selected for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. He scored two goals in the tournament, both against Mexico in the round of 16. One of his goals was a header that caused some debate because he appeared to be offside, but the goal was allowed.

After 2011, Tevez was not selected for the Argentina team for three years. However, he was called back in 2014 for friendly matches. In May 2015, he was part of Argentina's squad for the 2015 Copa América. He scored the winning penalty in the quarter-final shootout against Colombia. Argentina reached the final but lost to Chile on penalties.

Player Profile

How Carlos Tevez Played

Carlos Tevez was known for being a very quick, strong, and hard-working player. He was also very versatile, meaning he could play in many different attacking positions. He could be a main striker, a winger, or a supporting forward.

Goal Celebrations

Tevez was famous for his fun dancing after scoring goals, especially when he played for Boca Juniors and Corinthians. When he was at Manchester United, he sometimes put a baby's pacifier in his mouth after scoring. This was a sweet way to remember his baby daughter. After he moved to Manchester City, he often did a special dance where he put his hands together and rocked his body. Fans called it the "Tevez Dance."
