What was the Intercontinental Cup?
The Intercontinental Cup was like a "world championship" for clubs from these two continents. It was often called the World Club Championship before the FIFA Club World Cup started in 2000. It brought together the strongest teams from the most developed football regions.
How did the competition change?
From 2005, the Intercontinental Cup was replaced by the FIFA Club World Cup. The new FIFA Club World Cup includes winners from more parts of the world. Teams from North America, Asia, Africa, and Oceania also joined.
In 2017, FIFA officially recognized all winners of the Intercontinental Cup. They are now seen as "club world champions" with the same status as the FIFA Club World Cup winners. This means FIFA has two types of world champions: those from the Intercontinental Cup and those from the Club World Cup. Both competitions give the same important title.
Many football experts believe the Intercontinental Cup was a very exciting competition. This was because the teams from Europe and South America were often very evenly matched.
