Football's Top Club Competitions
The FIFA Club World Cup
The FIFA Club World Cup is a major football competition for club teams. The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) organizes this tournament every year. It officially decides which club is the world champion.
Teams that play in this cup are the winners of the top club competitions from different parts of the world. These include the champions from:
- AFC Champions League (Asia)
- CAF Champions League (Africa)
- CONCACAF Champions League (North America)
- Copa Libertadores (South America)
- OFC Champions League (Oceania)
- UEFA Champions League (Europe)
Also, the national champions from the host country get to play. After the final match, a representative from FIFA gives the winning team the FIFA Club World Cup trophy and a FIFA World Champions certificate.
The Intercontinental Cup
The Intercontinental Cup (played from 1960 to 2004) was another important football competition. It was also known as the European/South American Cup or the Toyota Cup. This cup was organized by UEFA (Europe) and CONMEBOL (South America).
The competition was played between the winners of Europe's UEFA Champions League and South America's Copa Libertadores. Many people called it the World Club Championship. This was before the first FIFA Club World Cup was held in 2000.
In 2005, the FIFA Club World Cup officially replaced the Intercontinental Cup. The new FIFA Club World Cup also includes champions from North America, Asia, Africa, and Oceania. In 2017, the FIFA Congress officially recognized all winners of the Intercontinental Cup as club world champions. This means they have the same official status as the FIFA Club World Cup winners.
