Sergio Leonel Agüero del Castillo (born 2 June 1988), known as Kun Agüero, is a famous Argentine former footballer. He played as a striker. Many people think he is one of the best strikers of his time. He is also considered one of the greatest players in the history of the Premier League.

Agüero played for Manchester City from 2011 to 2021. He is the club's all-time top goalscorer. He also holds the record for most Premier League hat-tricks, with 12.

He started his career at an Argentine club called Independiente. On 5 July 2003, he became the youngest player to play in the Argentine Primera División. He was only 15 years and 35 days old. This broke a 27-year record set by Diego Maradona, who later became his father-in-law.

In 2006, Agüero moved to the Spanish club Atlético Madrid. He quickly became one of the world's best young players. He won awards like the Don Balón and the Golden Boy. While at Atlético Madrid, he also won the UEFA Europa League and the UEFA Super Cup.

Agüero joined Manchester City in 2011. During his 10 years there, he won five league titles. He famously scored a last-minute goal in his first season. This goal helped Manchester City win their first league title in 44 years. He also won six EFL Cups and an FA Cup with the club. He was part of the team that reached Manchester City's first UEFA Champions League final.

He won a Premier League Golden Boot and was twice named in the PFA Team of the Year. He is the sixth all-time Premier League goalscorer. He is also the second-highest non-English scorer in the league, with 184 goals. He held the record for most Premier League goals for a single club until Harry Kane broke it in 2022.

Sergio Agüero joined the youth team of Independiente when he was nine. He made his first-team debut at 15 years and 35 days old. This happened on 5 July 2003, making him the youngest player ever to play in Argentina's top league. His performance was praised by the media.

He also became the youngest player to play in the Copa Libertadores, a big South American club competition. He held this record for three years. Agüero scored his first goal for Independiente in November 2004. He became a regular player and was chosen for Argentina's U-20 team. They won the 2005 FIFA U-20 World Cup.

During the 2005–06 season, Agüero scored 18 goals in 36 league games. His amazing performances caught the eye of big European clubs. In April 2006, he announced he would leave Independiente at the end of the season. His last game for the club was a 2–0 loss to Rosario Central. In May 2006, Agüero joined Spanish club Atlético Madrid. He quickly became a key player for the team. In the 2007–08 season, he scored 19 goals in La Liga. He was the third-highest scorer in the league. He played very well against Barcelona in March 2008, scoring twice and helping his team win 4–2. He also scored important goals against other top teams like Real Madrid. This helped Atlético finish fourth and qualify for the UEFA Champions League for the first time in over ten years.

Agüero formed a strong partnership with Uruguayan striker Diego Forlán. Together, they scored many goals. In March 2009, both Agüero and Forlán scored two goals each in a 4–3 win over Barcelona. Agüero scored the winning goal in the final minutes. Atlético finished fourth again, qualifying for the Champions League once more.

In the 2009–10 season, Agüero helped Atlético have one of their best seasons in a long time. He assisted both goals in a 2–1 win against English club Fulham in the 2009–10 UEFA Europa League final. He also helped Atlético reach the final of the Copa del Rey, but they lost to Sevilla.

On 27 August 2010, Atlético Madrid won the 2010 UEFA Super Cup by beating Inter Milan 2–0. Agüero set up the first goal and scored the second. In January 2011, he signed a new contract until 2014. He was also named the new vice-captain of Atlético. The 2010–11 season was his most successful for Atlético, as he scored 20 league goals. In May 2011, he scored his first career hat-trick against Mallorca. This was also his 100th goal for Atlético.

On 23 May 2011, Agüero announced he wanted to leave Atlético. He officially transferred to Manchester City on 28 July 2011.

Joining Manchester City: A New Chapter

On 28 July 2011, Manchester City announced that Agüero had signed a five-year contract. The transfer fee was around £35 million. He wore the number 16 shirt and used "Kun Agüero" on his back.

Agüero made his debut for City on 15 August 2011. He came on as a substitute in a 4–0 win against Swansea City. Within nine minutes, he scored his first goal. He then assisted another goal and scored again in injury time. His amazing 30-minute debut was highly praised by football experts.

City continued to play well. On 28 August, Agüero scored his third league goal in a 5–1 win over Tottenham Hotspur. In his third start, he scored his first Premier League hat-trick against Wigan Athletic. On 18 September, he scored twice against Fulham. On 23 October, Agüero played in his first Manchester derby. He scored in City's huge 6–1 victory over Manchester United. In November, he was nominated for the prestigious FIFA Ballon d'Or award.

Agüero scored his 13th goal of the season in a 5–1 win against Norwich City. He scored two goals in a 3–0 win against Stoke City in December. In February 2012, he scored the winning goal in a UEFA Europa League match against Porto. He scored again in the second leg, helping City win 6–1 on aggregate. He continued to score regularly in the league.

On 11 April, Agüero scored two goals and set up two more in a 4–0 win against West Bromwich Albion. On 14 April, he scored twice in a 6–1 win against Norwich City. This meant he had scored over 20 league goals in the Premier League. On 4 May, Agüero was named Manchester City Player of The Year. His goal against Norwich also won the club's Goal of the Season award.

The Famous Last-Minute Goal

The 2011–12 season came down to the final day. Manchester City needed to win to secure the Premier League title. They were playing against Queens Park Rangers. City were losing 2–1 in injury time, while Manchester United had won their game. City needed two goals to win the title.

Edin Džeko scored to make it 2–2, giving City a small hope. Then, in the 94th minute, Agüero received the ball from Mario Balotelli. He dribbled into the penalty area and fired a powerful shot into the net. This goal clinched the win and Manchester City's first top-flight English title since 1968! The stadium erupted in celebration. Agüero was so emotional that he cried on the field.

Injuries and More Trophies

Agüero started the 2012–13 season by winning the 2012 FA Community Shield against Chelsea. However, he suffered a knee injury in the first league match. He returned later and scored his first goal of the season against Fulham. He continued to score important goals, including two against Aston Villa. He also scored in Champions League games.

In April 2013, Agüero scored a solo goal to win the Manchester derby. He also scored a header to help City beat Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final. He signed a new contract in May 2013, keeping him at Manchester City until 2017. He said he was very happy and committed to the club.

On 14 August 2014, Agüero signed a new five-year contract until 2019. He scored his first goal of the 2014–15 season against Newcastle. He scored all four of City's goals in a 4–1 win over Tottenham on 18 October. This made him City's record scorer in the Premier League, passing Carlos Tevez. He was the first player that season to reach ten Premier League goals.

On 25 November, Agüero scored a hat-trick in City's 3–2 win over Bayern Munich in the Champions League. In December, he was named the Football Supporters' Federation Player of the Year for 2014. He also won the Premier League Player of the Month award for November 2014.

Agüero suffered a knee injury in December 2014. He returned in January 2015. On 11 February, he scored his first two goals of 2015 in a 4–1 win at Stoke City. On 12 April, he scored twice in a 4–2 derby loss to Manchester United. His second goal took him to 100 goals for City in all competitions. On 9 May, he scored a hat-trick in a 6–0 win over Queens Park Rangers. On 24 May, Agüero scored his 26th league goal of the season. He finished the 2014–15 season as the Premier League Golden Boot winner, meaning he was the top scorer.

On 7 August 2015, Agüero changed his shirt number from 16 to 10. On 3 October, Agüero scored five goals against Newcastle in a 6–1 comeback win. On 12 August 2017, Agüero scored in City's opening game against Brighton. On 9 September, he scored his second goal of the season against Liverpool in a 5–0 win. This was his 124th Premier League goal, making him the top-scoring non-European in the league's history. One week later, Agüero scored his sixth Premier League hat-trick in a 6–0 win at Watford. This put Manchester City at the top of the league.

On 21 October, Agüero scored his 177th goal for Manchester City in a 3–0 win over Burnley. This equalled the club record set by Eric Brook. On 1 November, he scored his record-breaking 178th goal for the team against Napoli in a Champions League game. This made him Manchester City's all-time leading goalscorer.

On 20 January 2018, Agüero scored a perfect hat-trick against Newcastle. This was his second hat-trick of the season. He won the Premier League Player of the Month award for January. On 10 February, Agüero scored four goals in a 5–1 win over Leicester City. This was his third hat-trick of the season. He opened the scoring in the 2018 EFL Cup Final on 25 February, helping City win 3–0 against Arsenal.

In City's first game of the 2018–19 season, Agüero scored two goals in a 2–0 win over Chelsea in the 2018 FA Community Shield. His first goal was his 200th for the club. On 19 August 2018, Agüero scored his ninth Premier League hat-trick against Huddersfield Town. This put him behind only Alan Shearer's record of 11. He also moved into the league's top ten all-time scorers.

On 21 September, Manchester City confirmed that Agüero had signed a new contract until 2021. On 22 September, in his 300th appearance for Manchester City, Agüero scored the opening goal in a 5–0 win over Cardiff City.

On 4 November, Agüero scored his 150th Premier League goal in a 6–1 win over Southampton. He became only the ninth player in history to reach this milestone. He was also the second-fastest player to do so, after Shearer. On 11 November, Agüero scored in a 3–1 win against Manchester United. This made him the joint highest scorer in Manchester derbies in the Premier League era, tied with Wayne Rooney.

On 3 February 2019, he scored a hat-trick against Arsenal, bringing his Premier League hat-trick tally to ten. On 10 February, Agüero scored his 11th Premier League hat-trick against Chelsea. With this, he equalled Shearer's record of 11 in the competition. This hat-trick also made him the new record holder for most league goals for Manchester City, with 160 goals. The following month, he scored twice in a 7–0 Champions League win over Schalke 04.

On 12 January 2020, Agüero scored his 12th Premier League hat-trick against Aston Villa. This took his total past Thierry Henry's 175 goals. He scored his 399th and 400th professional career goals in a 3–1 win over AFC Bournemouth on 25 August.

Final Season and Farewell

After being out with a knee injury, Agüero returned to action on 17 October 2020. On 21 October, he scored his first goal of the season in a 3–1 win over Porto in the 2020–21 UEFA Champions League. On 13 March 2021, Agüero scored his first league goal since January 2020.

On 29 March 2021, Manchester City announced that Agüero would leave the club at the end of the season. On 23 May, in his final league appearance for the club, Agüero came off the bench to score twice in a 5–0 win over Everton. His two goals meant he reached 184 league goals in 275 appearances. This broke Wayne Rooney's record for most Premier League goals for a single club.

On 29 May, he played his last match for Manchester City. He came on as a substitute in the Champions League final against Chelsea, which City lost 1–0. He was seen crying at the end, as he had hoped to win the Champions League in his final game. In total, Agüero scored 260 goals for City in 390 appearances.

Barcelona and Retirement

On 31 May 2021, Agüero agreed to join La Liga club Barcelona on a two-year contract. He officially joined on 1 July.

On 17 October, he made his debut as a substitute in a 3–1 win against Valencia. In his first El Clásico match on 24 October, Agüero came on as a substitute and scored his first goal for Barcelona. This was in the last minute of a 2–1 loss to Real Madrid.

One week later, he was taken to hospital with chest discomfort. It was diagnosed as a heart problem. On 15 December 2021, Agüero announced his retirement from football. Doctors advised him to stop playing due to his heart condition. He thanked all the teams he had played for.

International Career for Argentina

Youth Team Success

Agüero played for the Argentina U17 team in 2004. He scored goals and helped Argentina finish top of their group.

He represented Argentina at two FIFA World Youth Championships. He won both tournaments! He was part of the team that won in 2005 in the Netherlands, alongside Lionel Messi. At the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Canada, Agüero scored twice and helped set up three goals in a 6–0 win over Panama. He also scored the only goal against North Korea. In the knockout rounds, he scored two goals against Poland. Argentina went on to beat Mexico and Chile. In the final against the Czech Republic, Agüero was captain and scored the equalizing goal. Argentina won 2–1. Agüero won the Golden Boot (top scorer) and the Golden Ball (best player) awards for the tournament.

As part of the Argentine squad for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Agüero scored two goals in five minutes against Brazil in the semi-final. Argentina won 3–0 and went on to win their second straight Olympic gold medal.

Playing for the Senior Team

Agüero made his debut for the Argentine senior squad on 3 September 2006, in a friendly match against Brazil. One year later, he scored his first international goal against Bolivia. He scored three more goals as Argentina qualified for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Agüero was in the squad for the 2011 Copa América. In Argentina's first group match against Bolivia, he came on as a substitute and scored an equalizer to make it 1–1. On 11 July, he scored two goals against Costa Rica, helping Argentina win 3–0.

World Cups and Copas América

Agüero was part of Argentina's squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. He started as a forward alongside Lionel Messi.

He was also in the Argentine squad for the 2015 Copa América. In a warm-up game, he scored his first international hat-trick against Bolivia in a 5–0 win. On 13 June, he scored Argentina's first goal of the tournament against Paraguay. Three days later, he scored the winning goal against Uruguay. In the semi-final, Agüero scored as Argentina defeated Paraguay 6–1 to reach the final. Argentina lost the final to Chile in a penalty shootout.

Agüero was included in the squad for the Copa América Centenario in 2016. He scored his first goal of the tournament in a 5–0 win over Panama. Argentina reached the final again but lost to Chile in a penalty shootout for the second time in a row.

In May 2018, Agüero was named in Argentina's squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. In their first group match against Iceland, he scored his first ever World Cup goal in a 1–1 draw. On 28 June 2021, Agüero made his 100th senior international appearance for Argentina in a 4–1 win against Bolivia in the 2021 Copa América. He also set up Messi's second goal in that game. Argentina went on to win the tournament.

During the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Agüero was with the winning Argentine team. Even though he had retired due to his heart condition, he celebrated with the players after their win in the final.

Playing Style

Agüero is known as one of the best strikers in the world. He played mainly as a centre forward. He was also good at playing as a second striker, helping to set up goals for others. He was praised for his passing, teamwork, and vision. Agüero said that the Brazilian striker Ronaldo influenced his playing style the most.

Agüero is not very tall but has a strong build. People compared him to other great forwards like Carlos Tevez and Diego Maradona. His former manager, Roberto Mancini, compared him to the Brazilian striker Romário because of his speed, goalscoring ability, and technique. Agüero is naturally right-footed but can also strike well with his left foot. He could score from both inside and outside the penalty area with powerful and accurate shots.

Agüero was a great goalscorer. His playing style included being agile, quick, and having excellent movement without the ball. He was also strong, which helped him keep the ball. Agüero was married to Giannina Maradona, the youngest daughter of football legend Diego Maradona. Their son, Benjamín, was born in Madrid on 19 February 2009. Agüero and Giannina divorced in 2012.

Agüero's nickname "Kun" comes from his childhood. His grandparents gave it to him because he looked like a character named "Kum-Kum" from an anime TV show he loved. He said he likes the nickname because it's unique. Agüero has a tattoo on his right arm that says "Kun Agüero" in a special writing style from The Lord of the Rings. He also has a tattoo of his son's name and birth date on his left arm. He became a Spanish citizen in 2010 while playing for Atlético Madrid.

Agüero's brothers are Gastón del Castillo and Mauricio del Castillo. He is very close friends with Lionel Messi. They often shared a room when playing for the national team since 2005. Agüero described Messi as being "like a brother" in his 2014 autobiography.

During the 2020 coronavirus pandemic, Agüero started live-streaming himself playing video games on Twitch. He became very popular, especially among Spanish-speaking viewers. He even called Messi live on his stream once. In November 2022, Agüero joined the new Kings League as a team chairman. He also played as a guest player for his own team, Kunisports.

Agüero welcomed his second child, a daughter named Olivia, with actress Sofía Calzetti in 2024. In 2025, Disney+ released Kun by Agüero, a documentary series about his life and career.
