Building a Modern Stadium: Friends Arena's Story
Friends Arena wasn't always called that. When it was being built, its name was Swedbank Arena. The construction started in December 2009 and finished in 2012. It cost about 2.8 billion Swedish Krona, which is around 300 million Euros. That's a lot of money for a stadium!
Who Owns and Designed Friends Arena?
Many different groups own Friends Arena together. These include the Swedish Football Association, the local government of Solna, and several companies. The stadium was designed by a team of architects, including Berg Arkitektkontor and Populous. They made sure it was a fantastic place for sports and entertainment.
What Can You Do at Friends Arena?
Friends Arena is a true multi-purpose stadium, meaning it can be used for many different things.
Sports Events at the Arena
The main sport played here is soccer. It's the home stadium for the Sweden national football team. This is where they play their important international matches. The local soccer team, AIK Fotboll, also plays their home games here. Besides soccer, the arena can host speedway events, like the Speedway Grand Prix.
Concerts and Other Big Shows
Friends Arena is not just for sports. It's also a popular spot for huge concerts with famous artists. It can hold up to 65,000 people for concerts, which is more than for soccer games! The record attendance for any event was set by Bruce Springsteen in 2013, with over 56,000 fans.
Cool Features of the Stadium
One of the coolest things about Friends Arena is its retractable roof. This means the roof can open and close! It's great because events can happen no matter the weather, whether it's sunny or raining (or snowing!). This makes it a perfect venue all year round. The stadium also has 92 special suites for people who want a more private viewing experience.
