Solna is a city and a municipality in Stockholm County, Sweden. It is located just north of Stockholm City Centre. The main town of Solna is part of the larger Stockholm urban area. Solna is known for being one of the richest municipalities in Sweden.

The municipality is part of Metropolitan Stockholm. Unlike many Swedish municipalities, Solna is entirely urban, meaning it has no rural areas. It is the third smallest municipality in Sweden by land area.

Solna shares borders with several other municipalities. To the south, southeast, and northwest, it borders Stockholm Municipality. To the west, it borders Sundbyberg Municipality. To the north, it borders Sollentuna Municipality, and to the northeast, it borders Danderyd Municipality. The border with Danderyd is marked by the Stocksundet strait.

Solna is divided into eight traditional areas. These areas do not have administrative functions. They are Bergshamra, Haga, Hagalund, Huvudsta, Järva, Råsunda, Skytteholm, and Ulriksdal. The largest of these areas are Råsunda, Hagalund, and Huvudsta. The Solna Centrum shopping mall is located between them.

Most of Solna's built-up areas look like suburbs. However, there are also many large parks. You can also find Strawberry Arena, Sweden's national football stadium, near the Solna commuter rail station.

History of Sports in Solna

Solna has a rich history in sports, especially football. The Råsunda Stadium was Sweden's national football stadium from 1937 to 2012. It was demolished in 2013.

This stadium hosted important matches. The final games of both the 1958 FIFA (men's) World Cup and the 1995 FIFA Women's World Cup were played there.

Major Employers and Businesses

Solna is a big center for jobs in Greater Stockholm. Many different businesses and government offices are located here.

Important employers include the medical university Karolinska Institutet. The Karolinska University Hospital is also a major employer. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) is in Solna. The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) is also located here.

Several large companies have their main offices in Solna. These include Skanska, NextJet, and Vattenfall. The head office of Scandinavian Airlines and SAS Group is also in Solna.

Mall of Scandinavia, one of the biggest shopping malls in Scandinavia, opened in Solna in November 2015.

Getting Around Solna: Public Transport

Solna is easy to get around because it has a great public transport system. This system is run by SL.

You can use two commuter train stations to travel further away. There are also six metro stations for getting around the city. A large network of buses also serves the area.

Trams used to run in Solna until 1959. Light rail returned in 2013 when the Tvärbanan line was extended to Solna centrum. Another extension to Solna Station opened in 2014.

Places to See in Solna

Solna has many interesting places to visit, from beautiful parks to historic buildings.

  • Haga Park is a large park that is part of the Royal National City Park. King Gustav III started this park in the late 1700s. It was designed in the English landscaping style, with natural-looking gardens.
  • The city is home to three of Sweden's royal palaces: Haga Palace, Ulriksdal Palace, and Gustav III's Pavilion.
  • Strawberry Arena is Sweden's national arena for association football. It is also the home stadium for the local football club AIK.
  • Mall of Scandinavia is the biggest shopping mall in Scandinavia. It offers many shops, restaurants, and entertainment options.
  • The Solna Church was built in the 12th century. It was constructed as a round church for defense, which is a rare type of church in Sweden.

Sports Teams in Solna

Solna is home to several sports clubs, especially in football and bandy.

The bandy department of AIK has been very successful. Their women's team has won several national titles recently. The men's team was promoted to Elitserien for the 2019–20 season.

A famous football player, Alexander Isak, who plays for Newcastle and the Premier League, was born in Solna.
